Mindful Moments

Learn basic mindfulness techniques

In this 30-minute lesson, 4th-grade students will learn basic mindfulness techniques to help manage stress and improve focus. The lesson includes a guided meditation using the 'Mindful Minutes: Tree Meditation for Children' video and a breathing exercise. Students will also complete a reflection worksheet to internalize the mindfulness practices.

Whiteboard and markers, Comfortable seating or mats, Laptop/projector to play the video, Mindful Minutes: Tree Meditation for Children video, Reflection Worksheet, and Exit Ticket Quiz

Step 1

Introduction to Mindfulness

5 mins

  • Explain what mindfulness is: being aware of the present moment without judgment.
  • Discuss the benefits of mindfulness, such as stress reduction and improved focus.
  • Ask students if they have ever practiced mindfulness or meditation before.

Step 2

Guided Meditation

10 mins

  • Prepare the students by instructing them to sit comfortably and quietly.
  • Play the Mindful Minutes: Tree Meditation for Children video.
  • Guide them briefly through the meditation, ensuring they visualize being a tree swaying gently in the wind.

Step 3

Breathing Exercise

7 mins

  • Introduce the concept of mindful breathing.
  • Guide students through a simple breathing exercise:
    • Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 6 seconds.
    • Repeat this cycle three times, encouraging them to notice the sensation of their breath.

Reflection Worksheet

5 mins

  • Hand out the reflection worksheet.
  • Prompt students to reflect on their experience with the guided meditation and breathing exercise.
  • Encourage them to write about how they felt before, during, and after the activities.

Step 5

Closure & Exit Ticket

3 mins

  • Summarize the key points of the lesson.
  • Explain the importance of practicing mindfulness regularly.
  • Hand out the exit ticket quiz to assess understanding and gather feedback about the lesson.
