In this 30-minute lesson, 4th-grade students will learn basic mindfulness techniques to help manage stress and improve focus. The lesson includes a guided meditation using the 'Mindful Minutes: Tree Meditation for Children' video and a breathing exercise. Students will also complete a reflection worksheet to internalize the mindfulness practices.

Step 1
Introduction to Mindfulness

- Explain what mindfulness is: being aware of the present moment without judgment.
- Discuss the benefits of mindfulness, such as stress reduction and improved focus.
- Ask students if they have ever practiced mindfulness or meditation before.
Step 2
Guided Meditation
10 mins
- Prepare the students by instructing them to sit comfortably and quietly.
- Play the Mindful Minutes: Tree Meditation for Children video.
- Guide them briefly through the meditation, ensuring they visualize being a tree swaying gently in the wind.
Step 3
Breathing Exercise
7 mins
- Introduce the concept of mindful breathing.
- Guide students through a simple breathing exercise:
- Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 6 seconds.
- Repeat this cycle three times, encouraging them to notice the sensation of their breath.
Step 4
Reflection Worksheet
5 mins
- Hand out the reflection worksheet.
- Prompt students to reflect on their experience with the guided meditation and breathing exercise.
- Encourage them to write about how they felt before, during, and after the activities.
Step 5
Closure & Exit Ticket
3 mins
- Summarize the key points of the lesson.
- Explain the importance of practicing mindfulness regularly.
- Hand out the exit ticket quiz to assess understanding and gather feedback about the lesson.
