Mindful Moments for Little Ones

Introduce basic mindfulness techniques

This lesson introduces PreK students to mindfulness through engaging activities that help them recognize and manage their emotions. By using fun and interactive methods, children will learn simple strategies to calm themselves and focus, which are essential skills for emotional regulation and overall well-being.

Soft music for background, Emotion cards, Mindfulness bell, and Printable Emotion Cards

Step 1

Introduction

3 mins

  • Gather students in a circle on the floor.
  • Briefly explain what mindfulness is: "Mindfulness is paying attention to our feelings and the world around us."
  • Play soft background music to create a calming atmosphere.

Step 2

Mindful Breathing Activity

5 mins

  • Introduce the mindfulness bell and explain that when they hear it, they should take a deep breath in and out.
  • Ring the bell and guide students through 3 deep breaths.
  • Encourage them to notice how their body feels as they breathe.

Step 3

Emotion Recognition Game

5 mins

  • Show students the emotion cards one by one.
  • Ask them to mimic the emotion shown on each card.
  • Discuss briefly how each emotion feels and when they might feel that way.

Step 4

Closure

2 mins

  • Ask students to share one thing they learned about their feelings today.
  • Encourage them to use mindful breathing whenever they feel upset or excited.
