Activity

Mindful Communication Activity Guide

This activity guide is designed to help students deeply engage in the practice of mindful listening and effective communication. Follow the detailed instructions below during the workshop to facilitate learning and reflection.

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will be paired and assigned roles as speakers and listeners. The objective is to practice active listening, reflective summarization, and empathetic communication.

Instructions

  1. Pair Up: Divide the class into pairs. Each pair should agree on who will be the first speaker and who will be the listener.

  2. Assign Roles:

    • Speaker: Choose a topic of personal interest or recent experience. You have 3-4 minutes to speak without interruption. Focus on expressing your thoughts clearly.
    • Listener: Your role is to listen intently without interrupting. Take note of key points and any non-verbal cues. Your task is to later summarize what was said.
  3. Speaking Phase:

    • The speaker begins sharing their thoughts.
    • The listener practices mindfulness: maintain eye contact, stay present, and observe both verbal and non-verbal communication.
  4. Listening Phase:

    • After the speaker finishes, the listener should paraphrase the message back to the speaker. Include key details and any observed emotions.
    • The speaker confirms whether the summary was accurate. If not, add or adjust details as needed.
  5. Role Reversal: Switch roles and repeat the exercise with a new speaking topic.

Prompts & Reflection Questions

  • For the Speaker:

    • How did it feel to express your thoughts without interruption?
    • Did you notice any changes in your confidence or clarity when speaking?
  • For the Listener:

    • What strategies did you use to ensure you truly understood the speaker's message?
    • Were you able to notice body language or emotions that enhanced your understanding?
  • Group Reflection:

    • What challenges did you encounter during the activity?
    • In what ways did this exercise help highlight the importance of being present in conversations?
    • How can you apply these skills in everyday situations?

Tips for Facilitators

  • Monitor Pair Activities: Walk around the classroom to observe and provide gentle guidance if any pair struggles with the process.
  • Encourage Genuine Feedback: After the exercise, prompt students to reflect on both the positive and challenging aspects of the exercise.
  • Foster a Safe Environment: Remind students that this is a learning activity and that honesty, openness, and constructive feedback are key to improving communication skills.
