Mindful Autumn Walk

Encourage mindfulness and emotional regulation

In this lesson, students will embark on a mindful walk around the school campus to observe the changes in nature during autumn. They will practice being present and discuss how different sights, sounds, and smells make them feel. This lesson is important as it helps young students develop mindfulness and emotional regulation skills, which are crucial for their overall well-being and ability to focus.

Step 1

Introduction to Mindfulness

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle and explain what mindfulness is in simple terms: paying attention to the present moment.
  • Discuss why being mindful is important, such as helping us feel calm and focused.
  • Explain that they will go on a walk to practice being mindful of what they see, hear, and smell.

Step 2

Mindful Autumn Walk

15 minutes

  • Lead the students on a walk around the school campus.
  • Encourage them to notice the colors of the leaves, the sound of the wind, and any smells in the air.
  • Ask them to walk quietly and focus on their senses.
  • Pause occasionally to ask students what they are noticing and how it makes them feel.

Step 3

Reflection and Discussion

10 minutes

  • Return to the classroom and sit in a circle.
  • Use the Discussion Questions Attachment to guide a conversation about their experiences.
  • Encourage students to share what they noticed and how it made them feel.
  • Discuss how being mindful can help them in their daily lives.
