Mental Health for Athletes
7th Grade Session
30 Minutes

Introduce the session and set a positive, welcoming tone. Explain that today's lesson will focus on the importance of mental health in sports and everyday life.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is about how we think, feel, and act. It influences our performance
in sports and everyday challenges.

Questions to Consider:

  • How do you feel when you're under pressure in sports?
  • What helps you stay focused?

Discuss what mental health means and why it is important especially for athletes. Encourage students to think about how mental strength can influence performance.

Understanding Stress & Anxiety

• Identify common stressors in sports and daily life
• Discuss how stress impacts performance
• How can managing stress improve your game?

Lead a discussion on stress and anxiety. Ask students for examples of stressors they face in sports and daily life, and note the connection between mental well-being and athletic performance.

Interactive Role-Play Activity

Practice Stress Management Techniques:
• Deep Breathing
• Positive Self-Talk

Instructions:

  • Form small groups
  • Take turns practicing these techniques
  • Discuss what works best for each of you

Explain and facilitate role-play scenarios. Have students practice deep breathing and positive self-talk in groups. This active participation will help them internalize the techniques.

Activity

Mind Over Matter: Role-Play Stress Management Activity

This activity is designed to help you explore and practice stress management techniques such as deep breathing and positive self-talk through interactive role-play. This approach will encourage you to embody mental health strategies and see how they can reduce stress in sports and everyday situations.

Activity Guidelines

  1. Divide into Small Groups
Form groups of 3-4 students. Each group will have a chance to participate in role-play scenarios where each person will have a role.

  2. Scenario Distribution
Each group receives a scenario depicting a stressful situation in a sports or daily setting. Examples include:

    • A teammate getting overly anxious before a competition
    • A situation where practice isn’t going as planned
    • A moment when a game’s outcome is on the line under high pressure
  3. Role-Playing
Within your groups, assign roles such as the stressed athlete, a supportive teammate, and an observer. The stressed athlete will enact the scenario while the supportive teammate practices a stress management technique (like deep breathing or positive self-talk) to help calm the situation.

  4. Technique Practice
    - Deep Breathing: Instruct the stressed athlete to take several slow, deep breaths while the supportive teammate guides the process.

  • Positive Self-Talk: The supportive teammate can offer encouraging words or lead the stressed athlete in repeating a positive mantra.
  1. Discussion & Rotation
After each role-play session, pause and discuss as a group:
    • What worked well?
    • How did it feel to use the technique?
    • What might you do differently next time?

Rotate roles so that every student gets a chance to experience each position in the role-play.

Reflection

After the role-play sessions, take a few minutes to reflect on the experience:

  • Personal Reflection: Write down the strategy that you found most effective and why.

  • Group Sharing: In a round-table discussion, each group will share one takeaway. Consider how these techniques might help in real sports scenarios or daily life challenges.

Follow-Up

Remember, the goal of this activity is to remind you that mental health is just as important as physical health. Try using these stress management strategies whenever you feel overwhelmed. For further information and practice ideas, review the Mind Over Matter Slides for additional context and discussion prompts.

Happy role-playing, and let's build a strong mind to support a strong performance!
