Mind Mirror Session 1 Lesson Plan

Students will complete a self-awareness pre-test to identify personal strengths, feelings, and goals, then reflect on initial insights to build self-awareness.

Developing self-awareness in 5th graders boosts social-emotional growth, self-confidence, and readiness for new challenges by recognizing personal strengths and areas for growth.

10 minutes

  • Print enough copies of the Self Awareness Pre-Test and Initial Reflection Worksheet for each student
  • Review both materials to familiarize yourself with the questions and reflection prompts
  • Arrange seating so students can work quietly and have space to reflect

Step 1

Introduction

2 minutes

  • Briefly explain the purpose of today’s activity: to learn more about themselves by completing a pre-test
  • Emphasize honesty and that there are no right or wrong answers
  • Display the session agenda on the board

Step 2

Pre-Test Completion

5 minutes

  • Distribute the Self Awareness Pre-Test to each student
  • Instruct students to answer each question based on how they feel right now
  • Circulate to support any questions and encourage thoughtful responses

Step 3

Reflection and Sharing

5 minutes

  • Hand out the Initial Reflection Worksheet
  • Ask students to choose one strength and one area they’d like to grow, then write a sentence about each
  • Partner-share: students briefly discuss their reflections with a classmate

Step 4

Wrap-Up and Take-Home

3 minutes

  • Collect all pre-tests for later comparison with the post-test
  • Remind students to keep their reflection worksheets in their binders
  • Assign a take-home prompt: think of one goal based on today’s reflection and be ready to share tomorrow.

Self-Awareness Pre-Test

Pre-Test Instructions

  1. Take out the Self Awareness Pre-Test
  2. Answer all rating-scale questions honestly
  3. Complete open-ended questions thoughtfully
  4. Use pencils and write clearly

Distribute the pre-test and instruct students to answer honestly. Circulate to support any questions.

Reflection Activity

  1. Grab the Session 1 Reflection Worksheet
  2. Choose one personal strength and one area to improve
  3. Write why each is important to you
  4. Describe one action step you can take

Hand out reflection worksheets. Encourage students to think deeply about their strengths and growth areas.

Partner Share

  • Turn to your partner
  • Share your strength and growth action plan
  • Listen actively and ask one question
  • Spend 2 minutes per person

Students will complete a self-awareness post-test to evaluate their growth since the pre-test, reflect on progress, and set new goals.

  • Welcome students back and revisit the goal of Mind Mirror mini-unit
  • Explain today’s focus: measuring growth and setting future goals
  • Display today’s agenda on the board

Step 2

Review Pre-Test Take-Home

3 minutes

  • Ask a few volunteers to share the goal they set at home
  • Highlight examples of goals and encourage positive reinforcement
  • Transition by saying, “Now let’s see how far we’ve come!”

Post-Test Completion

4 minutes

  • Distribute the Self Awareness Post-Test
  • Instruct students to answer rating-scale questions based on how they feel now
  • Circulate to support and remind students to be honest
  • Collect completed worksheets when finished

  • Have students compare one rating from pre- and post-tests and write about any change
  • Partner up to share insights: what changed, why, and how they felt about it
