Memory Mosaic

Celebrating Our Year

Today we’ll reflect on our favorite moments, share with classmates, and create a collaborative Memory Mosaic collage.

Welcome students! Today we’ll celebrate our year by recalling top memories and creating a class Memory Mosaic collage. Introduce the activity and its purpose.

Objectives

  • Reflect on your most memorable moment
  • Share highlights with classmates
  • Design a personal Memory Tile
  • Collaborate to assemble the class mosaic

Walk through each objective so students know what to expect and why each step matters.

Step 1: Reflect

• Grab your Memory Reflection Worksheet
• Think of your standout memory of the year
• Describe, draw, and note why it’s special

Distribute the worksheets. Prompt students to think quietly and jot down notes. Circulate to support ideas.

Step 2: Share

• Volunteers share one memory highlight
• Listen and give positive feedback
• We’ll post key words on the board

Invite volunteers to share briefly. Model positive feedback and jot keywords on the board.

Step 3: Create Your Memory Tile

• Take a colored paper square
• Transfer your memory onto the tile (draw/write)
• Use markers, pencils, and decorations

Hand out colored squares. Encourage students to be creative and use words or images. Offer help as needed.

Step 4: Assemble the Mosaic

1. Introduction & Reflection (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Good morning, everyone! Can you believe today is our last day of school? We’ve shared so many great experiences this year, and I want us to celebrate by creating a class Memory Mosaic. Each of you will think back on your most special moment, capture it on a small tile, and then we’ll assemble all the tiles into one big collage.

By the end of our time together, you will:

  • Reflect on your favorite moment of the year
  • Share that moment with classmates
  • Design a personal Memory Tile
  • Collaborate to create our class mosaic

Let’s begin by reflecting. I’m handing out the Memory Reflection Worksheet. Take a moment to look at the first question:

  1. Describe Your Most Memorable Moment.
What happened? Who was there? What made it special?

Feel free to use symbols, words, or quick doodles. If you’d like a suggestion, think about a time you felt proud or excited—maybe during a project, a game, or a class discussion. I’ll give you two minutes of quiet time to write or sketch your ideas.”

(Wait 2 minutes while students work. Circulate and offer support.)

2. Memory Sharing (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Thank you for your thoughtful reflections! Now I’d love to hear some of your standout moments. Who would like to share first? Remember to tell us what happened, who was there, and why it mattered to you.”

(Select a volunteer.)

Student: “My favorite memory was when….”

Teacher: “That sounds amazing, [Student Name]! I love how you described feeling [emotion]. Can you say more about what made that feeling so strong?”

(After response.)

Teacher: “Thank you for sharing! Who else has a memory they’d like to share? Think about a different moment—a classroom success, a friendship milestone, or a fun day outside.”

(Invite one or two more students to share. Offer positive feedback and write keywords or small doodles on the board to inspire tile designs.)

3. Create Memory Tiles (12 minutes)

Teacher: “Now it’s time to make your Memory Tile! Each of you will get one colored paper square. On your tile, show your memory however you like:

  • Draw a picture
  • Write a few words or a sentence
  • Add symbols, stickers, or color patterns

Use the markers and colored pencils at your table. If you need inspiration, glance at the words and doodles we posted on the board. I’ll walk around to help with ideas and materials—just raise your hand if you need anything.”

(Distribute colored squares, markers, and pencils. Circulate and encourage creativity.)

4. Assemble the Memory Mosaic (5 minutes)

Teacher: “Great work on those tiles! Let’s bring them together. We’ll arrange the tiles on this large poster board. First, find a spot where your colors balance with your classmates’. Talk with a neighbor to decide placement. Then, glue your tile down when you’re ready.

As you place your tile, think: What themes or colors do I notice? How can we make the mosaic look its best as a team?”

(Guide students to discuss placement, help them glue tiles, and keep the process collaborative.)

5. Gallery Walk & Closure (3 minutes)

Teacher: “Our Memory Mosaic is complete—look at all those wonderful moments! Let’s stand up and walk around quietly to admire everyone’s work. As you walk, notice any patterns, colors, or symbols that appear more than once.”

(Pause for a brief gallery walk.)

Teacher: “What patterns or themes did you notice? Who wants to share one observation?”

(Student shares.)

Teacher: “Fantastic! Finally, before we say goodbye for summer, I have one more question: If you could choose one word to describe our year together, what would it be? Raise your hand, and share your word and why you chose it.”

(Invite a few students to respond.)

Teacher: “Thank you all for making this year so memorable. I hope this mosaic reminds you of the great times we shared. Have an amazing summer, and carry these memories with you. Goodbye, and enjoy your break!”
