Chunking & Visualization Rubric

Use this rubric to assess 5th-grade students’ application of chunking and visualization strategies during a 20-minute Memory Boost session.

Scoring Scale: 1 = Beginning, 2 = Developing, 3 = Proficient, 4 = Advanced

• Creates 1–2 groups but structure is inconsistent• Consistently breaks steps into 3–4 logical chunks

• Uses clear labels, numbering, or color coding
Visualization Detail• Minimal or no imagery
• Sketches absent or unclear
• Basic images/sketches for some chunks
• Lacks detail
• Drawings or mental images for most chunks
• Includes simple labels or arrows
• Vivid, multi-sensory visualizations (color, size, motion)
• Shows relationships, spatial layout
Task Recall Accuracy• <50% of steps recalled correctly
• Sequence errors
• ~50–70% of steps recalled
• Frequent omissions or swaps
• 80–90% of steps recalled in sequence
• Minor omissions or order variances
• 100% of steps recalled accurately and in correct order
