Activity

Freeze Dance – Counselor Theme

Use this quick dance-and-freeze activity to energize students while reinforcing listening skills and self-regulation—just like during a counselor session!

How to Play:

  1. Queue up the playlist below and play each song for 30–45 seconds.
  2. When the music is playing, students dance freely around their spot or in place.
  3. When the music stops, they must “freeze” and hold a calm, relaxed pose (e.g., seated tall, hands in lap, eyes forward).
  4. After a few seconds, restart the music and repeat.

Playlist Suggestions:

  1. “Happy” – Pharrell Williams
  2. “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” – Justin Timberlake
  3. “Shake It Off” – Taylor Swift
  4. “Best Day of My Life” – American Authors
  5. “Roar” – Katy Perry
  6. “Brave” – Sara Bareilles

Tips for Success:

  • Encourage students to show big, joyful movements when dancing, then model a calm freeze pose.
  • Emphasize listening: freeze immediately when the music stops, just like following counselor cues.
  • Use transitions: after a freeze, ask a quick question (“How did you feel when you froze?”) before dancing again.
  • Repeat 3–4 songs based on class energy and time.
