Meet Your School Counselor Plan

Students will learn about the school counselor’s role through discussion and interactive activities, then build connections by completing an “All About Me” worksheet.

This lesson establishes a safe, supportive classroom community, helps students feel comfortable seeking help, and enables the counselor and students to get to know each other.

Step 1

Welcome and Icebreaker

5 minutes

  • Greet students at the door with name tags.
  • Display the Counselor Introduction Poster and briefly introduce yourself.
  • Ask one fun fact about yourself to model sharing.

Step 2

Role of the Counselor

10 minutes

  • Show Feelings Flashcards one at a time.
  • Ask: “How might I help you when you feel this way?”
  • Highlight counselor roles (listening, problem-solving, supporting emotions).

Step 3

Get-to-Know-You Game

10 minutes

  • Explain the Get-to-Know-You Game Cards.
  • Students draw one card and share their response with the class (e.g., favorite book).
  • Counselor shares answers too to build rapport.

Step 4

All About Me Worksheet

15 minutes

  • Distribute All About Me Worksheet.
  • Students draw or write answers about their favorites, feelings, and how counselor can help.
  • Counselor circulates, asks questions, and provides positive feedback.

Step 5

Reflection and Closing

5 minutes

  • Invite volunteers to share one thing they learned about the counselor or classmates.
  • Reassure students they can visit the counselor anytime they need help.
  • Thank students for sharing and end on a positive note.

Meet Your School Counselor

Hello, First Graders! I’m Ms. Lee, your school counselor. I’m here to help you learn, grow, and feel safe every day.

Greet students as they enter and help them put on name tags. Introduce yourself as the school counselor and share one fun fact about you to model sharing.

What Does a School Counselor Do?

• Listen to your thoughts and feelings
• Help you solve problems with friends or schoolwork
• Support you when you’re sad, angry, or worried

Explain each role briefly. Use simple language and examples.

Feelings Flashcards

😊 Happy 😢 Sad 😠 Angry 😟 Worried 😕 Confused

Show one flashcard at a time. For each feeling, ask: “How might I help you feel better when you have this feeling?”

Get-to-Know-You Game

  1. Draw one card from the pile
  2. Read or listen to the question
  3. Share your answer with the class
    (Examples: “My favorite book is…”, “I like to play…”)

Shuffle and hold up the game cards. Model drawing and answering a card first to demonstrate.

Distribute the worksheet. Prompt: “Draw or write your answers in each box.” Encourage creativity and remind them there are no wrong answers.

Invite a few volunteers to share one thing they learned about you or their classmates. Reinforce that students can visit you anytime.

Print these cards on cardstock and cut them apart so you have individual feeling cards to show one at a time.

How to Use:

  1. Hold up one flashcard.
  2. Ask: “What feeling do you see?”
  3. Follow up: “How might I help you feel better when you have this feeling?”

Use these prompts to discuss how the counselor supports students’ emotions and builds trust.

  • What is your favorite subject in school?
  • If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

How to Use:

  1. Shuffle the cards and place them face down in the center.
  2. Students take turns drawing a card and reading (or having the counselor read) the question.
  3. The student shares their answer with the class.
  4. Counselor models an answer and asks a follow-up question to build rapport.
