Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Begin with a warm welcome and introduce the school counselor to the students. Explain the purpose of the session and what they will be learning about. Use name tags so everyone can get to know each other's names.

Step 2

Counselor's Role Discussion

10 mins

Using the chart paper, ask the counselor to write and draw some key points about their role. Make this an interactive discussion by asking students questions like 'What do you think a school counselor does?' and 'How can a school counselor help you?'. Ensure the points discussed are simple and easy to understand for 1st graders.

Step 3

Interactive Activity

10 mins

Hand out printable cards with different scenarios on how the counselor can help (e.g., feeling sad, trouble with friends). Ask the students to match the scenarios with solutions and discuss why they would go to the counselor in these situations. This can be done in small groups or pairs.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

Bring everyone back together and recap what they have learned about the school counselor. Encourage students to ask any remaining questions they might have. End with a positive note, reassuring them that the counselor is someone they can trust and go to for help.
