Meet Your School Counselor Lesson Plan

Students will learn who the school counselor is, what they do, and when to ask for help, while practicing sharing feelings.

Introducing the counselor fosters trust, builds social-emotional skills, and encourages students to seek support when needed, strengthening classroom community.

Step 1

Warm-Up Game

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle.
  • Show a Feelings Flashcard and have everyone name the feeling.
  • Ask a few volunteers to share a time they felt that feeling today.

Step 2

Counselor Introduction

5 minutes

  • Stand next to the Meet the Counselor Poster.
  • Introduce yourself as the school counselor and explain your name and office location.
  • Describe three ways you help students: talking about feelings, solving problems, making friends.

Step 3

Sharing Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute one Feelings Flashcard to each student.
  • Ask students to draw a picture on the Emotion Sharing Worksheet showing a time they felt their card’s emotion.
  • Circulate and model drawing and explaining your own example.

Step 4

Group Discussion

5 minutes

  • Invite students to share their drawings and explain when they might visit the counselor.
  • Prompt with questions: “What would you tell me if you felt sad at school?” and “How can I help you?”.

Step 5

Cool-Down & Certificate

5 minutes

  • Praise each student for sharing and listening.
  • Hand out a Counselor Visiting Certificate to each child to celebrate meeting the counselor.
  • Encourage students to wave to the poster as they leave the circle.

Feelings Flashcards

Let's name these feelings together!

Show each card from the Feelings Flashcards. Ask students to shout out the feeling and share a quick example.

Point to the Meet the Counselor Poster and explain each bullet. Encourage questions.

Sharing Activity

  1. Find your feeling card.
  2. Draw a time you felt this emotion on your Emotion Sharing Worksheet.
  3. Be ready to show and tell!

Distribute one Feelings Flashcard and one worksheet per student. Model a quick drawing of yourself feeling happy.

Group Discussion

Let's share:

  • When might you visit the counselor?
  • What would you tell me if you felt sad at school?
  • How can I help you?

Invite volunteers to show their drawing. Use prompts to guide responses, praise contributions.
