Meet Your Counselor

Counselor introduction

This lesson will introduce students to their school counselor through interactive activities and discussion. It's essential for students to feel comfortable approaching their counselor for support, and this lesson aims to build that familiarity and trust.

Step 1

Welcome and Introduction

  • Welcome the students and introduce yourself as the school counselor.
  • Explain the purpose of today's session: to get to know each other and understand what a school counselor does.

Step 2

Icebreaker Activity

10 mins

  • Hand out name tags and markers to students.
  • Instruct students to write their name and one fun fact about themselves on the name tag.
  • Ask each student to introduce themselves and share their fun fact with the group.
  • As the counselor, share your name and a fun fact about yourself too.

Step 3

Explaining the Counselor's Role

5 mins

  • Use a whiteboard to list out some key responsibilities of a school counselor.
  • Explain each responsibility briefly (e.g., helping with schoolwork, talking about feelings, resolving conflicts).
  • Emphasize that you are there to help and support them.

Q&A Session

5 mins

  • Open the floor for any questions students might have about the counselor's role or how they can seek help.
  • Answer questions thoroughly and reassure students that they can approach you anytime.

Closing Activity

  • Hand out post-it notes to each student.
  • Ask them to write one way they think a counselor could help them or another student.
  • Collect the post-it notes and thank the students for their participation.
  • Encourage them to approach you anytime they need support.
