Meet the Counselor

Introduce what a counselor does

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the role of a school counselor. They will participate in an interactive game and discussion to understand how a counselor helps students. This lesson aims to make students comfortable with the counselor and know who to approach when they need help.

A friendly puppet or stuffed animal, Printable counselor role cards, and Discussion prompt cards

Step 1

Introduction

3 minutes

Welcome the students and introduce the puppet/stuffed animal as the 'Counselor Helper'.
Explain that today they will learn about a special person in the school who helps students feel happy and safe.

Step 2

Interactive Game

8 minutes

Distribute the printable counselor role cards to the students.
Explain that the cards show different ways a counselor helps students.
Ask students to hold up their cards one by one and describe what is on their card with help from the teacher.
The 'Counselor Helper' puppet can comment or ask questions to make it interactive and fun.

Step 3

Discussion

4 minutes

Use the discussion prompt cards to ask students questions about the counselor's role.
Encourage students to share their thoughts and ask any questions they might have about the counselor.
Summarize that the counselor is there to help them and they can always go to the counselor if they need help or feel sad.
