Media Influence: Unpacking Bullying

Analyze media influence on bullying

Students will analyze how media can influence bullying behaviors and discuss ways to consume media critically. This lesson includes a media analysis activity using the 'Short Film: Are You Okay?' and group discussions. By understanding how media can perpetuate bullying, students learn to approach media consumption more critically and develop empathy for those affected by bullying.

Step 1

Introduction

10 mins

  • Begin by asking students what they understand by the term 'media influence' and how they think media can affect behaviors.
  • Explain that today's lesson will focus on how media can perpetuate bullying and what we can do to consume media more critically.

Step 2

Video & Media Analysis

15 mins

  • Introduce the video 'Short Film: Are You Okay?' which addresses online bullying and its impact on mental health.
  • Show the video: Short Film: Are You Okay?
  • Hand out the Media Analysis Worksheet and have students complete it individually.

Step 3

Group Discussion

15 mins

  • Split students into small groups and use the Discussion Guide to facilitate a conversation about the video's content.
  • Encourage students to share their own experiences with media and bullying.

Step 4

Developing Critical Media Consumption Skills

15 mins

  • Reconvene the class and discuss ways to critically consume media.
  • Introduce concepts such as fact-checking, understanding bias and stereotypes in media, and the importance of supporting friends who may be experiencing bullying.

Closure

5 mins

  • Summarize the key points discussed and encourage students to reflect on how they can apply critical media consumption in their daily lives.
  • Answer any remaining questions and thank students for their participation.
