Let's Count to 5!
Warm-Up: Count with me!
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!
- 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!
What do you notice about these numbers?
Welcome students and get them ready for math! Encourage them to count with you.
Ready, Set, Race to 5! (and more!)
Today we will play two games!
- First: 'Race to 5!'
- Then: 'Number Bond Match!'
- We'll use counters and cards to help us add and subtract.
- Our goal is to get super speedy with numbers up to 5!
Introduce the games and the goal. Show them the counters they will use.
Playing Race to 5!
How to play:
- Start with a number of counters.
- Listen for the addition (+) or subtraction (-) problem.
- Move your counters to solve!
Let's try one together: 3 + 2 = ?
Walk through an example problem or two, using the counters with the students. Ask them to verbalize their steps.
Game Time: Number Bond Match!
Let's play 'Number Bond Match'!
- Work with a partner.
- Flip two cards.
- Do they add up to 5? If yes, keep them!
- If no, turn them back over.
Ready to make some 5s?
Introduce the Number Bond Match Game. Explain the rules for finding pairs that make 5. Distribute cards.
Your Turn: Race to 5 Worksheet
Time for your worksheet!
- Work on your own.
- Use your counters to help you solve the problems.
- Take your time and do your best!
Explain that students will now work on their worksheet. Remind them to use their counters if they need to.
Great Job, Racers!
What did you learn today?
- What was your favorite part?
- Give yourselves a pat on the back for working hard!
Conclude the lesson. Ask for reflections and praise their effort.

Warm-Up: Counting to 5 (5 minutes)
(Display Math Race to 5! Slide Deck - Slide 1)
"Hello, everyone! Let's get ready for some math fun. First, let's count together from 1 to 5! Ready?"
(Lead students in counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.)
"Great job! Now, let's count backward from 5 to 1! Can you do it?"
(Lead students in counting 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.)
"Awesome! What did you notice about the numbers when we counted?"
(Allow students to share observations. Guide them to notice the sequence and how numbers go up and down.)
Introduction to Race to 5 (5 minutes)
(Display Math Race to 5! Slide Deck - Slide 2)
"Today, we have two exciting math games! The first is called 'Race to 5!' This game will help us practice adding and taking away numbers up to 5. Why do you think it's helpful to be good at these small number problems?"
(Listen to student responses, emphasizing that these are building blocks for bigger math problems.)
"To help us, everyone will get 5 small counters. These are your special math tools!"
(Distribute 5 counters to each student.)
"Hold up your 5 counters. Count them to make sure you have exactly 5."
(Pause for students to count.)
Guided Practice: Race to 5 Activity (7 minutes)
(Display Math Race to 5! Slide Deck - Slide 3)
"Let's learn how to play 'Race to 5!' I will tell you a math problem, and you will use your counters to find the answer. Let's try one together."
"Show me 3 counters. Good! Now, add 2 more. How many do you have now?"
(Wait for students to manipulate their counters and respond. Guide them if they struggle.)
"Yes! 3 plus 2 equals 5! You raced to 5! Let's try another one."
"Start with all 5 of your counters. Now, take away 1. How many are left?"
(Repeat process.)
"Fantastic! 5 minus 1 equals 4. You are doing great!"
(Continue with 1-2 more guided examples, varying between addition and subtraction within 5. Encourage students to explain their process: "How did you get that answer?")
Game Time: Number Bond Match (7 minutes)
(Display Math Race to 5! Slide Deck - Slide 4)
"Now, get ready for our second game: the Number Bond Match Game! This game is all about finding numbers that go together to make 5. It's like finding a partner for the number 5!"
"You will work with a partner. I have some special number cards for you. Each card has a number from 0 to 5."
(Distribute sets of number cards to pairs of students.)
"Here's how to play: First, mix up all the cards and spread them face down on your table. Take turns flipping over two cards. Look at the numbers. Can you add them to make exactly 5? If you flip a 2 and a 3, that makes 5! You get to keep those cards."
"If your cards don't make 5, just turn them back over in the same spot, and it's your partner's turn. The goal is to collect as many 'make 5' pairs as you can! I'll be walking around to help. Ready, set, play!"
(Circulate and provide support as students play the game.)
Independent Practice: Worksheet Time (4 minutes)
(Display Math Race to 5! Slide Deck - Slide 5)
"You've done a super job with our games! Now it's time to show what you know on your own. I'm going to give you a Race to 5 Worksheet. You can still use your counters to help you if you need them."
(Distribute the Race to 5 Worksheet.)
"Work quietly and try your best. If you have a question, raise your hand, and I will come to help you."
(Circulate the room, providing individual support and checking for understanding.)
Cool Down: Quick Check (2 minutes)
(Display Math Race to 5! Slide Deck - Slide 6)
"Alright everyone, let's stop our work for a moment. Put your pencils down. What is one new thing you learned or practiced today about adding or taking away numbers up to 5?"
(Call on a few students to share. Briefly reinforce their responses.)
"Fantastic effort today, everyone! Give yourselves a silent cheer for working so hard on your math skills. You are all amazing 'Race to 5' mathematicians!"
*(Collect worksheets.)
Game
Number Bond Match Game: Make a 5!
Materials: Small cards with numbers 0-5 (2 of each number).
Instructions:
- Work with a partner. You and a friend will play together.
- Mix the cards. Spread all the number cards face down on the table.
- Take turns. One person flips over two cards.
- Make a 5! Look at the two numbers. Can you add them together to make 5?
- For example, if you flip a 2 and a 3, that makes 5! (2 + 3 = 5)
- Keep the pair. If the two numbers add up to 5, you get to keep those cards! Then, it's your partner's turn.
- Put them back. If the two numbers do not add up to 5, turn them back over in the same spot. Then, it's your partner's turn.
- Play until no cards are left. The person with the most pairs that make 5 wins!
