Math Mindfulness Series

Develop self-regulation skills

This 8-week series focuses on helping 5th grade male-identifying students develop self-regulation skills during math instruction. Each week builds on the previous one, using trauma-informed teaching and collaborative learning strategies. Students will learn to manage their emotions and behaviors effectively, enhancing their ability to focus and succeed in math. This series is important as it equips students with essential skills for academic success and personal growth, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Step 1

Week 1: Introduction to Self-Regulation

  • Introduce the concept of mindfulness and how it can help in math.
  • Lead a short mindfulness exercise to help students focus and calm their minds.

Week 2: Mindfulness Techniques

  • Teach and practice different breathing exercises.
  • Allow students to write reflections on their experiences.

Week 3: Collaborative Problem Solving

  • Facilitate a discussion on group dynamics and self-regulation.

Week 4: Identifying Emotions

  • Reflect on how emotions affect math performance.

Week 5: Positive Self-Talk
