Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: Operation Opener

5 minutes

  1. Distribute the Order Operations Warm Up or display it on the board.
    2. Instruct students to complete the warm-up individually.
    3. Briefly review answers as a class, addressing any initial misconceptions. (Refer to the Order Operations Answer Key for solutions.)

Step 2

Introduction: What's the Order?

5 minutes

  1. Display the first slide of the Order Operations Slide Deck.
    2. Introduce the concept of the order of operations and its importance.
    3. Use the acronym PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction) or BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division & Multiplication, Addition & Subtraction) as appropriate for your curriculum. Explain each step clearly with examples from the slide deck.

Step 3

Guided Practice: Step-by-Step Solving

10 minutes

  1. Work through 2-3 examples together as a class using the Order Operations Slide Deck.
    2. Encourage students to participate by calling out the next step. Write out each step clearly on the board.
    3. Pay close attention to common errors (e.g., performing addition before multiplication). Provide immediate feedback and clarification.

Step 4

Independent Practice: Worksheet Challenge

5 minutes

  1. Distribute the Order Operations Worksheet.
    2. Instruct students to complete the first few problems independently.
    3. Circulate the room to provide individualized support and answer questions.
    4. Remind students to show their work step-by-step.

Step 5

Cool-Down: Exit Ticket

5 minutes

  1. Distribute the Order Operations Cool Down exit ticket or display it.
    2. Have students complete it individually.
    3. Collect the cool-downs to assess student understanding and inform future instruction. (Refer to the Order Operations Answer Key for solutions.)

Math Mastery Mission: Order Operations!

Unlock the secrets to solving any math problem!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting "Math Mastery Mission!" Explain that today they'll become masters of solving tricky math problems.

Our Mission Today:

Objective: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly apply the order of operations to solve multi-step mathematical expressions.

Why it Matters: This isn't just for tests! Knowing the correct order helps you solve problems accurately in science, engineering, and even everyday tasks like budgeting or following a recipe. It's your math superpower!

Read the objective aloud and emphasize the "why." Connect it to real-life examples where following steps is crucial (e.g., recipes, building instructions).

The Secret Code: PEMDAS/BODMAS

To solve problems correctly, we need a special order! Meet our guide:

Parentheses ( ) / Brackets [ ]

  • Always solve what's inside these first!
  • Think of them as a VIP section in the problem – they get priority!

Introduce the mnemonic. Explain that it's a tool to remember the steps. Start with P/B. Give a simple example like (5+3)*2 and ask what to do first.

The Secret Code: PEMDAS/BODMAS

Next up, we deal with:

Exponents / Orders (like powers and square roots)

  • These tell you how many times to multiply a number by itself (e.g., 2³ = 2 x 2 x 2).
  • They are the "power-ups" of math!

Explain exponents. Give a simple example like 2^3. If students are unfamiliar, briefly define what an exponent means (repeated multiplication).

The Secret Code: PEMDAS/BODMAS

After P and E/O, we tackle:

Multiplication x & Division ÷

  • These two are a team! You do whichever one comes first as you read the problem from left to right.
  • It's like reading a book – you start on the left and move to the right!

Emphasize that M&D are a 'team' and are done from left to right. Give an example like 10 / 2 * 3. Ask students which operation comes first.

The Secret Code: PEMDAS/BODMAS

And finally, we finish with:

Addition + & Subtraction -

  • These two are also a team! You do whichever one comes first as you read the problem from left to right.
  • The grand finale of our math mission!

Similarly, A&S are a 'team' and done left to right. Give an example like 5 + 3 - 2. Ask students which operation comes first.

Let's Practice Together!

Let's try a few problems using our new superpower!

Problem 1: 12 + (5 x 2) - 8 ÷ 4

Problem 2: 3² + 15 ÷ 3 - 4

(Teacher will guide the class through these problems on the board, explaining each step.)

This slide is for guided practice. Write a problem on the board and work through it step-by-step with student input. Reinforce saying the PEMDAS/BODMAS steps.

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It...

Now it's your turn to be the math detective! Use your Order Operations Worksheet to solve some problems on your own.

Remember to show your work step-by-step!

Explain that students will now try on their own using the worksheet. Circulate to provide support.

Mission Accomplished!

You've successfully started your Math Mastery Mission with the Order of Operations!

Keep practicing, and soon you'll be a math master!

Remind students of the importance of order of operations and how it makes math clearer. Encourage them to ask questions if they still have any.
