Script

Teacher Script: Math Marvels Meet-Up

Day 1: Math About Me

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

(Display Math Marvels Meet-Up Slide Deck - Slide 1: "Welcome, Math Marvels!")

"Good morning, future Math Marvels! Welcome to our special 'Math Marvels Meet-Up.' Over the next three days, we're going to use numbers and math in some really fun ways to get to know each other better and build an amazing math community. Who's excited?"

"To start, I want you to think about a number that is important to you. It could be your age, the number of siblings you have, your favorite number, or even the number of pets you have. Think about it for a moment. What number is special to you, and why? Let's go around and share one number and its story. I'll start!"
(Share your own example.)
"Who wants to go next?"
(Facilitate sharing, encouraging students to listen respectfully.)

Activity: Math About Me Worksheet (20 minutes)

"Fantastic stories, everyone! It's clear numbers are already a big part of our lives. Now, we're going to dive into our first activity: 'Math About Me.'"

(Distribute Math About Me Worksheet)

"Each of you has a worksheet titled 'Math About Me.' Your task is to fill in these sections using numbers to tell us more about yourself. For example, if it asks 'My age + 2 = ?', and you're 8, you'd write '8 + 2 = 10'. You'll be using different math operations and numbers to share fun facts."

"Take your time, be creative, and don't be afraid to ask questions if you get stuck. The goal is to create a numerical snapshot of YOU! I'll be walking around to help. You have about 15-20 minutes for this."
(Circulate, assist students, and provide individual guidance as needed.)

Share and Cool-Down (5 minutes)

(Display Math Marvels Meet-Up Slide Deck - Slide 2: "Day 1 Wrap-Up: New Discoveries!")

"Wow, these worksheets are amazing! I've seen some incredible math facts about you all. Who would like to share one interesting thing they wrote on their 'Math About Me' worksheet?"
(Call on 2-3 volunteers.)

"Great sharing, everyone! Before we finish for today, look at your worksheet and think: What's one new thing you learned about a classmate today, or something that surprised you? Turn to a partner and share your thought."
(Allow for quick partner shares.)
"Excellent! We'll continue our Math Marvels Meet-Up tomorrow. Great job today, everyone!"

Day 2: Math Scavenger Hunt

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

(Display Math Marvels Meet-Up Slide Deck - Slide 3: "Day 2: Math Scavenger Hunt!")

"Welcome back, Math Marvels! Yesterday, we discovered so many interesting number facts about each other. Today, we're going to put on our detective hats and go on a 'Math Scavenger Hunt' to learn even more!"

"Before we start, a quick math brain teaser: If I have 12 pencils and I give away half of them, how many do I have left? (Pause for answers). That's right, 6! Great job thinking quickly!"

Activity: Math Scavenger Hunt (20 minutes)

"Alright, detectives! Here's how our Math Scavenger Hunt Activity works. I've placed several math-related questions around the room. Each question describes a characteristic, and your job is to find a classmate who matches that description and get their signature. For example, a clue might say: 'Find someone whose favorite number is an even number.' If Sarah's favorite number is 4, you'd ask her to sign next to that clue!"

"You need to find a different person for each clue. This is a chance to move around, talk to everyone, and discover more math connections! Remember to be polite and ask nicely. You have about 15-20 minutes for the hunt. Ready, set, GO!"
(Monitor students, ensuring they are engaging appropriately and understand the task. Offer assistance if needed.)

Share and Cool-Down (5 minutes)

(Display Math Marvels Meet-Up Slide Deck - Slide 4: "Scavenger Hunt Share-Out!")

"Bring it back, Math Marvels! Let's hear about your discoveries. Who wants to share one person they found and an interesting math fact about them from the scavenger hunt?"
(Call on a few students to share.)

"That was a fantastic hunt! How did math help you get to know your classmates better today? What was your favorite part of the activity?"
(Facilitate a brief discussion.)
"Excellent work collaborating and learning today! See you tomorrow for our final Math Marvels Meet-Up!"

Day 3: Math Partner Interviews

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

(Display Math Marvels Meet-Up Slide Deck - Slide 5: "Day 3: Partner Up!")

"Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our last 'Math Marvels Meet-Up'! We've had so much fun getting to know each other through numbers. We did 'Math About Me' and a 'Math Scavenger Hunt.' What has been your favorite part so far?"
(Allow for a few quick responses.)

"Let's get our brains warmed up with another mental math challenge: If I buy a toy for 7 dollars and a book for 5 dollars, how much money did I spend in total? (Pause for answers). You got it, 12 dollars! You're all becoming master math thinkers!"

Activity: Math Partner Interviews (20 minutes)

"Today, we're going to put all our connecting skills to use with 'Math Partner Interviews.' I'm going to pair you up, and then you'll each interview your partner using a special worksheet."

(Pair students and distribute Math Partner Interview Worksheet)

"With your partner, you'll take turns asking the math-themed questions on this worksheet, like 'If you could have [number] of any one thing, what would it be?'. One person asks, the other answers, and then you switch. Make sure to write down your partner's answers clearly. This is a great chance to really listen and learn even more about your classmates through a math lens. You have about 15-20 minutes for your interviews."
(Circulate, listen to conversations, and offer support.)

Share and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

(Display Math Marvels Meet-Up Slide Deck - Slide 6: "Math Marvels Wrap-Up!")

"Alright, Math Marvels, let's bring our interviews to a close. Now, each pair will introduce your partner to the class and share one interesting, math-related fact you learned about them. Who wants to go first?"
(Facilitate introductions and sharing.)

"You've all done an amazing job getting to know each other, building a fantastic math community, and seeing how numbers are all around us and help us connect. Remember, just like in math, working together and communicating makes everything better! Thank you for being such wonderful Math Marvels!"
