Answer Key

Quick Sums Practice Answer Key

Grade: 3rd Grade  Aligned TEKS: 3.5A (addition & subtraction within 1,000)

Answer key for Quick Sums Practice. Detailed steps are shown to guide grading and explain reasoning.

Page 1: Numeric Practice

Part A: Column Addition

  1. 347 + 528 = 875
    Step-by-step:
    • Ones: 7 + 8 = 15 → write 5, carry 1
    • Tens: 4 + 2 + 1 (carry) = 7
    • Hundreds: 3 + 5 = 8
    → 875

  2. 619 + 274 = 893
    • Ones: 9 + 4 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
    • Tens: 1 + 7 + 1 = 9
    • Hundreds: 6 + 2 = 8
    → 893

  3. 485 + 317 = 802
    • Ones: 5 + 7 = 12 → write 2, carry 1
    • Tens: 8 + 1 + 1 = 10 → write 0, carry 1
    • Hundreds: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8
    → 802

  4. 792 + 109 = 901
    • Ones: 2 + 9 = 11 → write 1, carry 1
    • Tens: 9 + 0 + 1 = 10 → write 0, carry 1
    • Hundreds: 7 + 1 + 1 = 9
    → 901

Part B: Column Subtraction

  1. 803 – 456 = 347
    • Borrow from hundreds: 8→7, tens: 0→10; then borrow to ones: tens 10→9, ones: 3→13
    • Ones: 13 – 6 = 7
    • Tens: 9 – 5 = 4
    • Hundreds: 7 – 4 = 3
    → 347

  2. 650 – 289 = 361
    • Ones: borrow from tens (5→4, 0→10): 10 – 9 = 1
    • Tens: borrow from hundreds (6→5, 4→14): 14 – 8 = 6
    • Hundreds: 5 – 2 = 3
    → 361

  3. 914 – 578 = 336
    • Ones: borrow from tens (1→0, 4→14): 14 – 8 = 6
    • Tens: borrow from hundreds (9→8, 0→10): 10 – 7 = 3
    • Hundreds: 8 – 5 = 3
    → 336

  4. 730 – 365 = 365
    • Ones: borrow from tens (3→2, 0→10): 10 – 5 = 5
    • Tens: borrow from hundreds (7→6, 2→12): 12 – 6 = 6
    • Hundreds: 6 – 3 = 3
    → 365

Page 2: Word Problems

For each, write the number sentence, then solve.

  1. Sarah has 485 stickers and gives away 267.
    Number sentence: 485 – 267 = ?
    Calculation (borrow as above): 485 – 267 = 218

  2. A farmer picked 328 apples in the morning and 469 in the afternoon.
    Number sentence: 328 + 469 = ?
    Calculation: 8 + 9 = 17 (carry 1), 2 + 6 + 1 = 9, 3 + 4 = 7 → 797

  3. 645 books in library, 298 checked out.
    Number sentence: 645 – 298 = ?
    Calculation: borrow procedure → 347

  4. 412 action figures sold Monday, 389 Tuesday.
    Number sentence: 412 + 389 = ?
    Calculation: 2 + 9 = 11 (carry 1), 1 + 8 + 1 = 10 (carry 1), 4 + 3 + 1 = 8 → 801

Challenge (Optional)

  1. Combine: 754 – 389 + 216
    Step 1: 754 – 389 = 365
    Step 2: 365 + 216 = 581
    → 581

Use these solutions to check student work and review any common errors or strategies.
