Mastering the Art of Conversation Lesson Plan

Students will learn how to converse appropriately and independently using practical strategies and role-playing activities, with accommodations to support individual IEP and 504 needs.

Enhancing conversation skills is a vital life skill. This lesson incorporates IEP and 504 considerations to promote inclusion, adjust to individual learning needs, and boost self-confidence.

  • Review the Mastering the Art of Conversation Lesson Plan to familiarize yourself with role-playing scenarios, key discussion prompts, and IEP/504 accommodations.
  • Prepare role-playing cards with conversation starters, potential responses, and visual aids to support communication.
  • Arrange the classroom to include quiet areas for students needing more individual support.
  • Ensure assistive communication materials (e.g. picture cards, speech devices) are readily available.

Step 1

Introduction & Overview

3 Minutes

  • Greet the students and explain the importance of effective communication.
  • Introduce the session’s objective emphasizing that adjustments and supports will be provided based on each student's IEP or 504 plan.
  • Outline the session structure, including role-playing activities and accommodations available.

Step 2

Role-Playing Activity

12 Minutes

  • Divide students into pairs or small groups, pairing students with similar communication needs if beneficial.
  • Distribute role-playing cards that incorporate visual supports and simple language.
  • Monitor groups closely, providing one-on-one support or extra processing time for students as indicated by their IEP or 504 plan.
  • Adjust scenarios dynamically based on observed needs, ensuring every student can actively participate.

Review & Reflection

  • Lead a group discussion to review key conversation strategies and share experiences.
  • Specifically ask for feedback on whether the accommodations helped, and if additional support is needed.
  • Reinforce the positive communication strategies and acknowledge differing but valuable contributions from each student.
  • Summarize how role-playing and accommodations contribute to improved communication skills.
