Lesson Plan
Map Detectives Lesson Plan
Students will learn to read map keys, identify cardinal directions using a compass rose, interpret common map symbols, and apply these skills by completing a mini-map activity.
Building map skills strengthens spatial reasoning, supports real-world navigation, and aligns with 3rd grade social studies standards on geography.
Audience
3rd Grade
Time
30 minutes
Approach
Hands-on exploration with guided practice and quick assessment.
Materials
- Map Symbols Reference Sheet, - Compass Direction Flashcards, - Mini-Map Worksheet, - Printed Classroom Maps, - Projector or Interactive Whiteboard, - Colored Markers or Pencils, and - Sticky Notes
Prep
Prepare Materials
10 minutes
- Print copies of Map Symbols Reference Sheet and Mini-Map Worksheet.
- Print or display the classroom map on projector/whiteboard.
- Shuffle and ready the Compass Direction Flashcards.
- Gather sticky notes, markers, and pencils.
- Review lesson steps and anticipate student questions.
Step 1
Introduction to Maps
5 minutes
- Ask: “Where have you seen or used a map?”
- Show the printed classroom map via projector or handout.
- Highlight real-life uses of maps (finding places, planning trips).
- Explain today’s detective mission: reading maps like real explorers.
Step 2
Teaching Map Keys
7 minutes
- Distribute Map Symbols Reference Sheet.
- Model how a map key explains symbols (e.g., trees, buildings).
- Use sticky notes: students place corresponding symbol labels on the classroom map.
- Check understanding: ask volunteers to read one symbol’s meaning.
Step 3
Exploring Compass Directions
7 minutes
- Display a large compass rose and review N, S, E, W.
- Use Compass Direction Flashcards to quiz class.
- Students stand and point in direction called out (e.g., “Point north!”).
- Discuss why knowing directions matters on a map.
Step 4
Symbol Interpretation Activity
8 minutes
- Hand out Mini-Map Worksheet.
- Students identify and label symbols using the Map Symbols Reference Sheet.
- Circle an object on the mini-map and indicate its direction from a landmark (e.g., “The school is east of the park”).
- Differentiation:
- Provide one-on-one support with symbol cards for learners needing extra help.
- Challenge advanced learners with secondary directions (NE, SW).
Step 5
Exit Ticket Assessment
3 minutes
- On a blank space, students draw one map symbol and write its meaning.
- Write one sentence using a cardinal direction (e.g., “The tree is west of the cabin”).
- Collect worksheets to gauge mastery and inform next Tier 1 lesson.

Slide Deck
Map Detectives: Exploring Maps
Join our detective team! Today, we will learn how to read maps, understand compass directions, and decode map symbols.
Welcome students and set the stage for today’s lesson. Explain that they will become “Map Detectives” and uncover hidden treasures on maps by learning key map skills.
Learning Goals
• Read and use a map key (legend)
• Identify cardinal directions on a compass rose
• Recognize and interpret common map symbols
Briefly walk through the three learning goals. Encourage students to listen for these as they move through each activity.
What Is a Map?
A map is a drawing that shows places and their relationships to each other.
Real‐life examples:
• Finding your way in a mall
• Planning a road trip
• Reading a treasure map!
Engage students by asking where they’ve seen maps in their daily lives (e.g., phone GPS, theme parks). Show a quick example of a simple neighborhood map.
Map Keys (Legends)
• A map key explains what each symbol means.
• Helps us read maps quickly.
Check out our symbols: Map Symbols Reference Sheet
Distribute the Map Symbols Reference Sheet. Model how to match a symbol on the sheet to one on our classroom map. Have 2–3 students label symbols with sticky notes.
Compass Directions
• A compass rose shows the four main directions:
– North (N)
– East (E)
– South (S)
– West (W)
Practice with: Compass Direction Flashcards
Display a large compass rose on the board. Call out directions (North, East, South, West) and have students point. Use flashcards for quick drill.
Common Map Symbols
Examples from our sheet:
• 🌳 Tree
• 🏠 House
• 🚗 Road
Use the Map Symbols Reference Sheet to guide you.
Show a few symbols and ask students to name what they think each represents before revealing the answer. Reinforce how the key helps.
Symbol Interpretation Activity
- Identify and label each symbol on your mini‐map.
- Circle one object and write its direction from a landmark (e.g., “The school is east of the park”).
Worksheet: Mini-Map Worksheet
Hand out the Mini-Map Worksheet. Read instructions aloud and model the first symbol together. Circulate to support.
Detective Challenge!
• Need help? Use symbol cards.
• Ready for more? Try secondary directions (NE, SW).
Be a super detective by describing two objects’ positions!
Differentiate as needed: offer symbol cards for students who need extra support. For early finishers, challenge them to use NE, SW, etc.
Exit Ticket
- Draw one map symbol and write its meaning.
- Write a sentence using a cardinal direction (e.g., “The tree is west of the cabin”).
Explain the exit ticket and give students exactly 3 minutes. Collect tickets as students finish to assess individual understanding.
Wrap-Up & Reflection
• What was your favorite symbol?
• How might you use compass directions outside the classroom?
Great work, Map Detectives!
Wrap up by asking a few volunteers to share what they learned as a detective. Reinforce how these skills help in everyday life.

Compass Direction Flashcards
Use these cards to practice identifying and pointing to the four main compass directions.
How to Use:
- Shuffle the cards and hold them facedown.
- Show one card at a time to the class.
- Call out the direction written on the card.

Cards Include:
- North (N): Point straight ahead toward the top of the room.
- East (E): Point to your right.
- South (S): Point straight behind you.
- West (W): Point to your left.
