Make Your Year Wish Lesson Plan
Students will articulate their personal “wishes” for the school year by completing a guided reflection and discussing their goals, laying the foundation for self-motivated growth.
This lesson cultivates self-awareness and goal-setting skills, helping students clarify their hopes and stay engaged throughout the year.

Prep
Prepare Materials
5 minutes
- Print one copy of the Year Wish Worksheet for the student.
- Gather pens or pencils.
- Review the worksheet prompts to anticipate supportive follow-up questions.
Step 1
Introduction
2 minutes
- Welcome the student and explain that today they’ll create a personal “wish” or goal for the school year.
- Briefly define what a “wish” means in this context (hopes, dreams, or personal goals).
Step 2
Reflective Writing
6 minutes
- Give the student the Year Wish Worksheet.
- Ask them to read each prompt and write their responses thoughtfully:
- One big wish for the year
- Steps they can take to move toward this wish
- Resources or people who can help
- Circulate to offer encouragement and clarify prompts as needed.
Step 3
Discussion
5 minutes
- Invite the student to share their completed worksheet.
- Ask supportive questions such as:
- “What part of your wish excites you most?”
- “Which step feels most challenging?”
- Validate their ideas and offer additional suggestions or resources.

Conclusion
2 minutes
- Summarize the student’s main wish and next steps.
- Encourage them to keep their worksheet somewhere visible as a reminder.
- Explain any follow-up check-in plans to revisit their wish later in the term.

Year Wish Discussion
Purpose
This one-on-one conversation helps students clarify, refine, and commit to their personal “wish” for the school year. It builds self-awareness, motivation, and accountability.
Materials
- Year Wish Worksheet
- Notebook or whiteboard (optional for jotting ideas)
Discussion Flow
1. Opening (1 minute)
- Greet the student warmly and remind them of the purpose: “Today we’ll talk through the wish you wrote down, so you feel confident about making it happen.”
- Emphasize that this is a safe space for honest reflection.
2. Main Questions (10 minutes)
- “What is your one big wish for this school year?”
- Follow-up: “Why did you choose this wish?”
- Follow-up: “How will achieving this make you feel?”
- “Which of the three steps you listed excites you the most?”
- Follow-up: “What makes that step enjoyable or meaningful?”
- Follow-up: “How could you get started on it this week?”
- “What obstacles might you face along the way?”
- Follow-up: “Have you encountered anything like this before?”
- Follow-up: “What strategies could help you overcome these challenges?”

3. Closing (2 minutes)
- Summarize the student’s wish, most exciting step, and key next actions.
- Encourage them to keep their Year Wish Worksheet visible—on a desk, a locker, or in a planner.
- Explain the plan for a future check-in (date or frequency) to revisit progress and adjust if needed.
- End with positive reinforcement: “I’m proud of the thought you’ve put into this. You’ve got a plan—now let’s make it happen!”

Wish Visualization Activity
Purpose
Guide students through a quick visualization to help them “see” and emotionally connect with their Year Wish, increasing motivation and clarity.
Time
8 minutes
Materials
- Blank drawing paper or notebook page
- Colored pencils or markers
- Year Wish Worksheet
Instructions
- Introduction (1 minute)
- Remind the student of their one big wish from the Year Wish Worksheet.
- Explain: “Seeing is believing—today we’ll imagine and draw what achieving your wish looks like.”
- Guided Visualization (2 minutes)
- Ask the student to sit comfortably, close their eyes (if they’re comfortable), and take three deep breaths.
- Prompt them:
- “Imagine waking up on a day when you’ve achieved your wish. What do you see around you?”
- “How do you feel in your body? What sounds or sights are in this moment?”
- “What are you doing, and who is with you?”
- After 2 minutes, have them open their eyes.
- Draw or Write Your Vision (4 minutes)
- Give the student drawing paper and colored pencils.
- Ask them to sketch a scene or write a short paragraph capturing their visualization:
- What’s happening?
- How do you look and feel?
- Who or what is supporting you in the scene?
- Provide a large space for artwork or writing:
- Reflection (1 minute)
- Invite the student to share one detail they included and why it stood out.
- Prompt: “Looking at your drawing or writing, what excites you the most about making this wish real?”
- Leave a small space for a final sentence:
“My favorite part of this vision is...
”
Collect the visualization to keep alongside the Year Wish Worksheet. Encourage the student to revisit their drawing whenever they need inspiration.
