Magnet Magic!

How magnets work

This lesson introduces students to the basic principles of how magnets work through a hands-on project-based learning approach. Students will watch a video, engage in a simple magnet exploration activity, and complete a worksheet to reinforce their understanding. This lesson is designed to be engaging and accessible for students with ASD, including non-verbal learners, by using visual aids and tactile experiences to enhance learning.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Begin with a brief introduction to magnets, explaining that they can attract or repel certain objects.
Show the video on how magnets work to provide a visual understanding.

Step 2

Magnet Exploration Activity

15 mins

Provide each student with a magnet and a variety of small objects (metal and non-metal).
Encourage students to explore which objects are attracted to the magnet and which are not.
Assist students in sorting the objects into two groups: magnetic and non-magnetic.
For non-verbal students, use visual cards to help them indicate their findings.

Step 3

Worksheet Completion

5 mins

Distribute the "Magnet Exploration" worksheet.
Guide students through the worksheet, helping them to draw or place stickers on objects that were magnetic.
Encourage students to share their findings with the group.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

Recap the key points about how magnets work.
Ask students to share one thing they learned or found interesting about magnets.
