Life Skills Quest: Session 1

Personal Hygiene Basics
Grade 3 Small-Group (Tier 2)
30 Minutes

Welcome students! Today we kick off Session 1 of our Life Skills Quest program. We’ll focus on personal hygiene basics: how to wash our hands properly and brush our teeth the right way.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, students will:

• Learn and practice the 5 key handwashing steps
• Learn and practice proper toothbrushing technique
• Complete and take home a Personal Hygiene Checklist

Read the learning objectives aloud and ensure students understand what they will learn and why it’s important.

Warm-Up Discussion

• What hygiene routines do you do every day?
• Why do you think washing hands and brushing teeth are important?

(Refer to Handwashing Steps Poster and Toothbrushing Techniques Diagram)

Use this slide to prompt discussion. Encourage students to share their daily routines and explain why clean hands and teeth matter.

Handwashing Steps

  1. Wet hands with clean, running water
  2. Apply soap and rub palms together
  3. Rub back of hands, between fingers, and under nails
  4. Rinse thoroughly under running water
  5. Dry with a clean towel or paper towel

(See full poster: Handwashing Steps Poster)

Explain each step as you point to the poster. Then model at the station and invite students to follow along.

Toothbrushing Technique

• Hold brush at a 45° angle to gums
• Use gentle, small circular motions
• Brush outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of all teeth
• Brush for at least 2 minutes, then rinse

(See diagram: Toothbrushing Techniques Diagram)

Demonstrate proper brushing motions in front of a mirror. Emphasize small circles and covering all areas of the mouth.

Hands-On Practice

  1. Station 1: Wash hands following the poster steps
  2. Station 2: Practice brushing motions using mirrors and sample toothpaste
  3. Use the Personal Hygiene Checklist to track each step
  4. Switch stations after half the time

Divide students into small groups at the handwashing and brushing stations. Circulate to guide and correct technique.

Reflection & Next Steps

• Share one new thing you learned today
• Take home your Personal Hygiene Checklist and use it daily
• Bring your checklist to Session 2 for review

Gather students back together. Invite volunteers to share one thing they learned. Remind them to take home their checklists.

Activity

Hygiene Hero Role-Play

Objective: Students will reinforce and demonstrate correct handwashing and toothbrushing routines by acting out roles and giving peer feedback.

Materials:

Teacher Prep (10 minutes):

  • Print and cut Hygiene Hero Role Cards: label cards “Hero,” “Observer,” and “Sneaky Germ.”
  • Arrange posters and checklists in the activity area.
  • (Optional) Prepare capes or badges to identify Heroes.

Instructions:

  1. Introduction & Role Assignment (5 minutes)

    • Explain that today’s mission is to become Hygiene Heroes who keep germs away by showing perfect handwashing and toothbrushing.
    • Describe each role:
      • Hero: Demonstrates the full routine.
      • Observer: Watches closely and checks off each step on the Personal Hygiene Checklist.
      • Sneaky Germ: Tries to distract the Hero with silly questions or actions (e.g., “Did you skip step 2?”) to test the Hero’s focus.
    • Divide students into groups of three and hand out one of each role card per group.
  2. Teacher Model (3 minutes)

    • Choose a volunteer to act as Hero while you play Observer and another student plays Sneaky Germ.
    • Model a complete handwashing cycle in front of the class using the poster, narrating each step.
    • Then model the toothbrushing routine in front of the mirror diagram, again narrating steps.
  3. Role-Play Rounds (12 minutes)

    • Groups begin the role play:
      1. Hero performs handwashing following the poster steps; Observer marks steps on the checklist.
      2. Sneaky Germ tries to distract or asks questions; Hero stays focused and completes each step.
      3. Switch roles clockwise and repeat until each student has been Hero once.
      4. After handwashing, repeat the same sequence for toothbrushing using the diagram and checklist.
    • Teacher circulates, praises strong Heroes, and gently corrects any missed steps.
  4. Group Reflection & Recognition (5 minutes)

    • Reconvene whole class. Ask:
      • Which Hero had the clearest routine? Why?
      • How did you stay focused when being distracted by the Sneaky Germ?
    • Hand out “Hygiene Hero” stickers or badges to each student for demonstrating strong focus and correct technique.
    • Encourage students to use their checklists at home and share the role-play game with family members.
