Life Skills: Daily Routines!

What do you do every day to get ready?

Welcome students and introduce the topic. Ask them to think about what they do each morning. Lead into the idea of 'life skills' – things we do to take care of ourselves.

Our Important Daily Routines

  • Brushing Our Teeth
  • Getting Dressed

Explain that daily routines help us stay healthy, happy, and ready for our day. Show the main routines we'll discuss.

Brush Those Pearly Whites!

Steps to a healthy smile:

  1. Get your toothbrush and toothpaste.
  2. Put a little toothpaste on.
  3. Brush all your teeth!
  4. Rinse and spit.
  5. Smile!

Focus on brushing teeth. Ask students why it's important. Demonstrate with props (toothbrush, toothpaste). Go through each step clearly.

Practice: Brushing Our Teeth

Let's remember the steps!
What do we do first?
Then what?

Engage students in a quick review of brushing steps. You can do a call-and-response or have them mime the actions.

Ready, Set, Get Dressed!

Steps to choose and put on clothes:

  1. Pick clothes for the day.
  2. Put on underwear.
  3. Put on shirt.
  4. Put on pants/shorts.
  5. Put on socks and shoes (if needed).

Transition to getting dressed. Discuss why we get dressed and how choosing clothes can be fun. Use clothing props to show different items.

Practice: Getting Dressed

What clothes do we put on first?
How do we put on a shirt?
Why do we get dressed every day?

Have students practice miming getting dressed. Ask them about the order of clothes. Reinforce the idea of choosing clothes for the weather.

You Did It! Daily Routine Superstars!

Good job learning about daily routines!

Which routine will you practice today?

Conclude the lesson. Ask students to share one routine they feel confident about or want to try. Emphasize that practicing makes us better!

Life Skills: Daily Routines Script

Warm-Up: What Do You Do? (5 minutes)

"Good morning, everyone! I'm so happy to see your bright faces today. I have a question for you: What's the very first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Think about it... what do you do even before you come to school?"

(Wait for responses. Guide them if needed towards basic actions like getting out of bed, stretching, etc.)

"Awesome ideas! So, we all do certain things every day to get ready, right? These are what we call life skills. They are things we learn to do to take care of ourselves and be super independent! Today, we're going to talk about some very important daily routines that help us get ready for our day!"

Introduction to Daily Routines (5 minutes)

"Look at our slide here: Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 2. It shows some of the routines we'll talk about. Why do you think these routines are important? Why do we do them?"

(Allow students to share ideas – e.g., to be clean, to be healthy, to be ready.)

"Exactly! Doing these things helps us stay healthy and strong. Our first routine is super important for a happy smile! Let's talk about Brushing Our Teeth!"

(Transition to Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 3 and hold up the toothbrush and toothpaste props.)

"Who here brushes their teeth? Great! Let me show you the steps. First, you get your toothbrush and some toothpaste, just a little bit, like a pea! Then, you brush all your teeth – top, bottom, front, and back! Make sure to get all the sugar bugs! After that, you rinse your mouth with water and spit it out. And finally... you show off your big, clean, healthy smile!"

Activity: Brushing Teeth Steps (5 minutes)

"Okay, now it's your turn to help me remember the steps! Let's look at Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 4. I'll ask, and you can show me or tell me!"

"What's the very first thing we do to brush our teeth? (Get toothbrush and toothpaste!) Show me!"

"Then what? (Put toothpaste on!) Show me!"

"And after that? (Brush our teeth!) Show me your brushing motions!"

"What comes next? (Rinse and spit!) Show me!"

"And the best part? (Smile!) Show me your biggest, brightest smiles! You got it!"

Introduction to Getting Dressed (5 minutes)

"Fantastic job with brushing! Now, who can tell me what you put on after you brush your teeth and are ready to leave your house? That's right, your clothes! Our next important daily routine is Getting Dressed!"

(Transition to Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 5 and hold up clothing props.)

"Why do we get dressed? (To go outside, to be warm, to look nice.) Yes! And we choose clothes for the weather. If it's cold, we wear a warm coat. If it's sunny, maybe shorts and a t-shirt! Let me show you some steps to getting dressed. Usually, we start with underwear, then a shirt, then pants, and finally socks and shoes if we need them. It's like building an outfit!"

Activity: Getting Dressed Practice (5 minutes)

"Alright, let's practice getting dressed! Look at Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 6. You don't need real clothes, just pretend with me!"

"First, pretend to put on your underwear!"

"Next, put on your pretend shirt! Where does your head go? Where do your arms go?"

"Now, your pretend pants! One leg, then the other!"

"And last, your socks and shoes! Wiggle those toes!"

"Wonderful! Everyone looks so ready for the day! Now, I have a special paper for you. It's our Daily Routines Worksheet. On this paper, I want you to look at the pictures and circle the things you need for brushing your teeth and getting dressed. Let's work on this quietly for a few minutes."

(Distribute worksheets and circulate to assist students.)

Cool-Down: My Favorite Routine (5 minutes)

"Okay, time to wrap up our amazing lesson on daily routines! Look at our last slide: Life Skills Slide Deck - Slide 7. You all are Daily Routine Superstars!"

"Can everyone tell me, or show me, one daily routine you are really good at? Or maybe one that you want to practice more at home?"

(Allow a few students to share.)

"That's fantastic! Remember, practicing these life skills every day helps you grow into strong, independent, and healthy individuals. Keep up the great work, and keep practicing your daily routines!"
