Leaf Pressed Coasters

Lesson Plan

Leaf Pressed Coasters

Learn about preservation and decorative arts

In this lesson, teens will explore the art of preservation by pressing leaves and creating unique coasters. This activity will teach them about the importance of preserving natural elements and provide hands-on experience in decorative arts. It will also encourage creativity and provide a calming and engaging experience.

Audience

Teens (ages 13-18)

Time

1 hour

Approach

Learn about preservation and decorative arts

Materials

Leaves (various shapes and sizes), Parchment paper, Heavy books, Tiles or coasters, Mod Podge or clear-drying glue, Foam brushes, Scissors, Paper towels, and Disposable gloves

Step 1

Introduction

10 mins

Introduce the activity by discussing the importance of preserving natural elements and how art can be used to showcase the beauty of nature. Explain the steps involved in making leaf pressed coasters.

Step 2

Step 1: Collecting and Preparing Leaves

10 mins

Take the students outside to collect a variety of leaves. Once back inside, have them flatten the leaves between layers of parchment paper and place heavy books on top. Leave them pressed for 5-10 minutes.

Step 3

Step 2: Preparing the Coasters

10 mins

Hand out the tiles or coasters to the students. They should wipe the surfaces clean with a damp paper towel and let them dry.

Step 4

Step 3: Arranging and Attaching the Leaves

10 mins

Students will arrange their pressed leaves on the coasters. Once they are happy with the arrangement, they can use Mod Podge or clear-drying glue to attach the leaves to the coaster. Use a foam brush to apply the glue evenly over the surface, pressing down to ensure the leaves adhere well.

Step 5

Step 4: Sealing the Coasters

15 mins

After the glue has dried, students will apply a coat of Mod Podge or clear-drying glue over the entire coaster, including the leaves, to seal and protect them. This may take 5-10 minutes to dry, during which students can share and discuss their designs.

Step 6

Closure and Reflection

5 mins

Reconvene as a group and have each student show their coasters. Discuss what they enjoyed about the activity and what they learned about preservation and decorative arts. Encourage them to think about other natural elements they might want to preserve in future projects.
