Kindness Spotlight Lesson Plan
Students will reflect on a kind moment from the school year and create thank-you cards to express appreciation to adult helpers.
Building empathy and gratitude strengthens social bonds and cultivates a positive classroom community. Students learn to recognize kindness and practice expressing thanks.

Prep
Prepare Materials
5 minutes
- Print enough copies of Kindness Reflection Worksheet and Gratitude Card Template for each student
- Gather markers and sticky notes
- Write “Kindness Spotlight” at the top of a piece of chart paper
- Review the Kindness Spotlight Lesson Plan to familiarize yourself with steps
Step 1
Introduction to Kindness Spotlight
5 minutes
- Gather students in a circle or on the carpet
- Explain that today they’ll recall the kindest moment they experienced or witnessed this year
- Point to the chart paper title “Kindness Spotlight” and invite one student to share an example
- Emphasize that recognizing kindness helps our classroom feel like a supportive community

Individual Reflection
7 minutes
- Distribute Kindness Reflection Worksheet
- Prompt students to write or draw the kindest thing they remember happening to themselves or someone else
- Circulate to support students who need help recalling details
- Encourage honesty and personal connection
Step 3
Gratitude Card Creation
10 minutes
- Hand out Gratitude Card Template and markers
- Ask each student to choose an adult at school (teacher, aide, custodian, etc.) who helped them
- Instruct them to write a short thank-you message and decorate the card
- Remind students to include why they’re thankful and sign their name
Step 4
Sharing and Celebration
8 minutes
- Invite volunteers to stand by the chart paper and share their card and the kindness moment they recalled
- After each share, place the card on the chart paper under “Kindness Spotlight”
- Encourage classmates to give a thumbs-up or verbal acknowledgment
- Close by highlighting how recognizing and saying thanks spreads more kindness

Individual Reflection
• Write or draw the kindest thing you remember happening to you or someone else this year.
• Be honest and think about why it felt kind.
Distribute the Kindness Reflection Worksheet. Circulate to support students as they write or draw their kindness moment.
Create Your Gratitude Card
• Choose an adult (teacher, aide, custodian, etc.)
• Write a short thank-you message telling why you’re grateful
• Decorate your card and sign your name
Hand out the Gratitude Card Template and markers. Encourage students to think of any adult helper at school.
Share & Celebrate
• Volunteers stand by the chart paper and share their card & kindness moment
• After sharing, attach your card under “Kindness Spotlight”
• Classmates give a thumbs-up or kind words
Invite volunteers to share their card and kindness story. Lead classmates in giving positive feedback.
Keep Spreading Kindness
Remember: Small acts of kindness brighten someone’s day. Keep looking for ways to share and say thanks!
Highlight how noticing and expressing thanks keeps kindness growing. Encourage everyday acts of kindness.

Gratitude Card Creation Activity
Time: 10 minutes
Description: Students create personalized thank-you cards for adults who have supported them this year.
Materials
- Gratitude Card Template
- Markers
- Crayons
- Stickers or decorative items (optional)
Steps
1. Select an Adult
• Ask yourself: Who at our school has helped me or shown me kindness this year?
• Examples: teacher, aide, custodian, bus driver, lunch staff, coach.
2. Write Your Thank-You Message
On your card template, write a short note that includes:
- The person’s name
- Why you’re grateful (be specific about what they did)
- A warm closing and your name
3. Decorate Your Card
• Use markers, crayons, and stickers to add color and personality.
• Draw pictures or patterns that make your card special.
4. Share and Deliver
• (Optional) Volunteer to read your message aloud and show your decorated card to the class.
• When we finish, deliver your card to the adult you chose or place it on our “Kindness Spotlight” chart.
Teacher Note: Encourage students to speak clearly and to think about how their words will make the recipient feel appreciated.
This activity helps students practice gratitude, strengthens relationships, and keeps the kindness momentum going!
Project Guide
Kindness Cards Display
Objective: Create a vibrant display of student-made gratitude cards to celebrate kindness and empower students to recognize acts of support in their school community.
Why: Displaying thank-you cards publicly honors student voices, reinforces a culture of gratitude, and reminds everyone of the caring community within the school.
Audience: 3rd Grade Students
Time: 15 minutes
Materials
- Completed thank-you cards (from Gratitude Card Template)
- Large piece of chart paper or bulletin board space
- String or yarn
- Clothespins or tape
- Markers or decorative letters for the title
- Border trim or construction paper (optional)
Prep (5 minutes)
- Choose a prominent location in the classroom or hallway for the display.
- Secure string or yarn horizontally across the board or wall at child-height.
- Gather clothespins, tape, markers, decorative letters, and trim.
- Create a bold display heading (e.g., “Kindness Spotlight”) using markers or pre-cut letters.
Instructions
1. Introduce the Display (2 minutes)
- Remind students of the kind moments they recorded on their Kindness Reflection Worksheet and the cards they made.
- Explain that today they’ll showcase those thank-you cards to celebrate kindness together.
2. Organize Cards (3 minutes)
- Invite students to place their cards on a nearby desk or table.
- Ask volunteers to help sort cards by the adult role (e.g., teachers, aides, custodians) or alphabetically by recipient name.
3. Hang the Cards (5 minutes)
- Using clothespins or tape, attach each card to the string or directly on the bulletin board under the display heading.
- Encourage careful spacing so each card is visible and easy to read.
4. Decorate & Label (2 minutes)
- Add optional border trim or student-drawn decorations around the display.
- Write labels or captions (e.g., “Thank You, Ms. Garcia!”) beneath special cards if desired.
5. Gallery Walk & Reflection (3 minutes)
- Invite students to walk by the display quietly and read a few cards.
- Prompt them to notice patterns: Which acts of kindness appear most often? How does it feel to see these messages?
Teacher Tip: Leave the display up for at least one week so adults and other classes can visit. Periodically invite students to add new cards as they experience and recognize more acts of kindness.
This mini-project turns individual gratitude into a shared celebration, spreading kindness throughout the school!
