Kindness Quest Lesson Plan

In this 30-minute session, students will define kindness, recognize feelings in themselves and others, and practice kind actions through role-play and reflection—building empathy and positive peer relationships.

Helping 2nd graders develop empathy and prosocial behavior fosters a caring classroom climate, supports emotional growth, and reduces conflicts by strengthening friendships.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Gather students in a circle and introduce today’s Kindness Quest focus.
  • Ask: “What does it mean to be kind?” and invite each student to share an example.
  • Record student responses on large paper to display kindness ideas.

Step 2

Emotion Recognition

7 minutes

  • Show an Emotion Cue Card and ask: “What feeling is this?”
  • Refer to the Feelings Chart for additional vocabulary.
  • Discuss how kind actions make people feel safe, happy, and valued.

Step 3

Scenario Role-Play

10 minutes

  • Divide the group into pairs or small trios.
  • Give each team a Scenario Prompt Card.
  • Students act out the scenario twice: once unkindly and once kindly.
  • After each role-play, discuss which actions showed kindness and why.

Step 4

Kindness Ticket Reflection

5 minutes

  • Distribute Kindness Tickets to each student.
  • Ask students to draw or write one act of kindness they can do this week.
  • Invite volunteers to share their tickets and explain their ideas to the group.

Step 5

Closing Connection

3 minutes

  • Thank students for their participation and kindness ideas.
  • Go around the circle and have each student name one new thing they learned.
  • Encourage students to use their Kindness Tickets in the classroom and beyond.

Exploring Friendship Skills, Empathy, & Kindness
Grade: 2 | Time: 30 minutes | Tier 2 Group Lesson

Welcome students and introduce the lesson name and goals. Set a warm, friendly tone.

What Is Kindness?

• What does it mean to be kind?
• Can you share an example of a kind action?

(Write responses on chart paper for all to see.)

Guide students to share their own ideas. Record responses on chart paper.

Emotion Recognition

• Look at the Emotion Cue Cards.
• Use the Feelings Chart to name the emotion.
• How might someone feel when they receive kindness?

Show each Emotion Cue Card one at a time. Encourage students to point to matching feeling on the Feelings Chart.

Scenario Role-Play

• In pairs, pick a Scenario Prompt Card.
• Act it out twice:

  1. Unkind version
  2. Kind version
    • After each, discuss: Which actions showed kindness? Why?

Split students into pairs or trios. Hand out one Scenario Prompt Card per group. Monitor role-plays and lead discussion.

Kindness Ticket Reflection

• Here is your Kindness Ticket.
• Draw or write one act of kindness you will do this week.
• Be ready to share your plan with the group.

Hand out Kindness Tickets. Circulate as students draw/write their ideas.

Closing Connection

• Thank you for participating!
• Go around and name one new thing you learned today.
• Remember: Use your Kindness Ticket in class and beyond.

Encourage all students to participate. Reinforce using their tickets in daily routines.
