Kindness Quest Lesson Plan

Students will recognize and name basic emotions, practice sharing and acts of kindness, and review our classroom rules through engaging activities.

Building social-emotional skills in kindergarten helps children develop empathy, self-regulation, and a positive learning environment, reducing conflicts and fostering cooperation.

Step 1

Welcome and Introduction

5 minutes

  • Gather students on the carpet and greet them warmly
  • Point to the Class Rules Poster and quickly review two key rules: “Be kind” and “Share with friends”
  • Explain that today’s quest is to practice kindness and learn about feelings

Step 2

Emotion Recognition Activity

10 minutes

  • Show one card at a time from the Emotion Flashcards
  • Ask: “What emotion do you see? How can you tell?”
  • Encourage students to mimic the facial expression
  • Praise correct answers and gently guide misunderstandings
  • Cover 4–5 emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised, scared)

Step 3

Sharing and Kindness Practice

10 minutes

  • Introduce the Kindness Sharing Chart on the board
  • Invite a volunteer to come up and draw or write one kind act they can do for a friend
  • After each entry, ask the class: “How does this act make someone feel?”
  • Continue until 5–6 acts are listed (take short turns around the circle)
  • Model language: “I can help a friend feel happy by …”

Step 4

Wrap-Up and Reflection

5 minutes

  • Return to carpet and review two things:
    • One emotion we named today
    • One kind act from our chart
  • Ask volunteers to share how they’ll use kindness today
  • Give each student a high-five or sticker for participating
  • Remind them to follow our class rules throughout the day

Kindness Sharing

Draw or write it on our chart!

Bring out the Kindness Sharing Chart. Invite a volunteer to draw or write one kind act. After each entry, ask: “How does this act make someone feel?”

Quest Wrap-Up

  1. Name one emotion we learned.
  2. Share one kind act.
    Great job, helpers!

Gather back on the carpet. Ask volunteers to share 1) an emotion we named and 2) a kind act from our chart. Hand out stickers or high-fives.

Celebrate your helpers! Remind everyone to keep following our class rules and share kindness all day.
