Kindness Counts!

Understanding acts of kindness

In this lesson, students will explore the concept of kindness through a fun and interactive activity followed by a group discussion. This lesson is important as it helps students recognize the value of kindness, understand the positive emotions it generates, and identify opportunities to practice kindness in their daily lives.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Begin by asking students to share examples of kindness they have seen or experienced.
  • Explain that today they will explore how kindness can be shown in different situations.

Step 2

Kindness Activity

10 mins

  • Distribute post-it notes and markers to each student.
  • Ask students to write or draw one act of kindness they can do for someone at school or home.
  • Have students share their ideas with a partner and discuss how it might make the other person feel.
  • Collect the post-it notes and create a 'Kindness Wall' in the classroom.

Step 3

Role-Playing Activity

10 mins

  • Divide students into small groups and assign each group a scenario where they can demonstrate kindness (e.g., helping a friend who fell, sharing a toy, comforting someone who is sad).
  • Allow each group to act out their scenario in front of the class.
  • After each role-play, discuss as a class how the act of kindness made the characters feel and why it was important.

Step 4

Kindness Storytime

5 mins

  • Ask students to create a short story or comic strip about a character showing kindness.
  • Provide paper and crayons for drawing.
  • Allow students to share their stories with the class if time permits.

Step 5

Closure and Kindness Challenge

5 mins

  • Summarize the key points discussed about kindness and the role-playing activity.
  • Introduce the 'Kindness Challenge' where students are encouraged to perform at least one act of kindness each day for a week.
  • Ask students to reflect on their acts of kindness and how it made them and others feel.
  • Thank students for their participation and remind them of the positive impact of kindness.
