Step 1

Introduction: What is Christmas?

5 minutes

  • Greet students and introduce the topic: "Today, we're going on a 'Joyful Christmas Journey' to learn about Christmas!"
    - Ask students what comes to mind when they hear the word 'Christmas'. (Brief sharing)
    - Display Slide 1: Welcome to Our Joyful Christmas Journey! and Slide 2: What is Christmas? from the Christmas Cheer Slide Deck.
    - Explain that Christmas is a holiday celebrated by many people around the world, filled with special traditions and symbols.

Step 2

Exploring Christmas Traditions & Symbols

10 minutes

  • Go through Slide 3: Christmas Tree & Decorations and Slide 4: Gifts & Giving from the Christmas Cheer Slide Deck. Discuss each symbol and tradition, asking students if they have seen or participated in these.
    - Use the Christmas Discussion Guide to prompt conversation and encourage students to share their experiences.
    - Continue with Slide 5: Festive Foods & Family and Slide 6: Caroling & Community.
    - Emphasize that while many celebrate, traditions can look different from family to family.

Step 3

My Christmas Traditions Activity

10 minutes

  • Distribute the My Christmas Traditions Worksheet.
    - Explain the activity: Students will draw or write about their favorite Christmas tradition or a symbol that is special to them.
    - Circulate among students, offering help and encouraging them to share their ideas.
    - Play some gentle instrumental Christmas music in the background if appropriate.

Step 4

Wrap-Up & Reflection

5 minutes

  • Ask a few students to briefly share what they drew or wrote on their worksheet.
    - Reiterate that Christmas is a time of joy, giving, and celebrating with loved ones, with many unique traditions.
    - Distribute the Christmas Reflection Cool Down and have students complete it before they leave.
    - Conclude by thanking students for sharing their 'Joyful Christmas Journey' with you.

Talk about the joy of giving and receiving. Emphasize that giving can be just as joyful, or even more so, than receiving.

Festive Foods & Family

Christmas is a time for delicious treats and being together!

  • Special Meals: Turkey, ham, cookies, and more!
  • Family Gatherings: Spending time with loved ones, near and far
  • Making Memories: Sharing stories and laughter

Discuss different foods and family gatherings. Highlight that 'family' can mean different things to different people.

Caroling & Community

Spreading cheer through songs and togetherness!

  • Christmas Carols: Singing joyful songs
  • Community Events: Parades, light displays, and festivals
  • Helping Hands: Volunteering and supporting neighbors

Explain caroling and community events. Ask if anyone has ever gone caroling or seen Christmas lights.
