Evaluating Outcomes
Understanding the impact of impulsive vs. thoughtful decisions.
Introduce the topic by explaining how decisions, whether impulsive or thoughtful, can lead to different outcomes. Emphasize that understanding these differences can help us make better choices.
Impulsive Actions
Scenario: A student makes a hasty decision without thinking of the consequences.
What might have happened next?
Share a real-life scenario where an impulsive decision led to unexpected consequences. Ask students to brainstorm what might have been done differently.
Thoughtful Decisions
Scenario: A student pauses to think before acting, leading to a more positive outcome.
How did thinking it through change the result?
Contrast the previous slide with a scenario that involves thoughtful decision making. Highlight key differences and possible positive outcomes.
Group Discussion
Discuss:
- Can you think of a time when acting impulsively led to a negative outcome?
- How might the situation have improved if you had paused to think?
Encourage interactive discussion. Use the slide as a prompt for students to discuss and reflect on similar experiences in their own lives.
Reflect & Act
Remember: Taking a moment to think can lead to better outcomes. What decision will you rethink today?
Summarize the key points of the lesson. Ask students to reflect individually on how they can implement thoughtful decision making in their daily lives.
Game
Is It Worth It?
Welcome to "Is It Worth It?", an interactive lesson designed to improve your decision-making skills by evaluating the consequences of impulsive actions versus thoughtful decisions. In this lesson, you'll be exposed to real-life scenarios, engage in quick decision-making games, and reflect on the outcomes of your choices.
Materials and Structure
For this lesson, we'll be using a variety of materials:
- Decision Consequences (Lesson Plan): This lesson plan guides the overall session and breaks down each activity step by step.
- Evaluating Outcomes (Slide Deck): This slide deck contains real-life scenarios to help you visualize the impact of your decisions.
- Impulse vs. Thoughtfulness (Game): Engage in this interactive game where you'll make quick decisions and then reflect on the outcomes.
- Consequences Debate (Discussion): Join the class debate to discuss various scenarios and their outcomes.
- Personal Reflection (Cool-Down): End the session with a reflective writing exercise, where you analyze your own decision-making experiences.
Note: The entire session is designed for our 7th Grade class and will last about 50 minutes.

Discussion
Consequences Debate
In this discussion, students will explore and debate the outcomes of impulsive versus thoughtful decisions. The debate is designed to encourage critical thinking, self-reflection, and articulate communication. Here’s how you can structure the discussion:
Guidelines for the Debate
- Introduce the Topic:
- Begin by reminding students of the scenarios discussed in the Evaluating Outcomes (Slide Deck) and the experiences from the Impulse vs. Thoughtfulness (Game).
- Explain the objective: to evaluate the impact of both impulsive and thoughtful decisions.
- Form Small Groups:
- Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students, so every student has a chance to participate.
- Discussion Prompts:
Provide each group with these guiding questions:
- Are there situations where acting quickly might actually be beneficial? Explain your thoughts.
- In your opinion, what are the benefits of pausing to think before making a decision?
- Think of a situation where taking a moment to reflect before acting might have resulted in a different outcome. What might have been different?
- Can you share a time when you made an impulsive decision? What was the outcome?
- Debate Format:
- Assign roles within each group. For example, one or two students can take the side supporting that thoughtful decisions always yield better results, while others can discuss the benefits or necessity of quick, impulsive decisions in certain situations.
- Encourage each side to provide specific examples and justify their reasoning.
- Whole-Class Reflection:
- After group discussions, bring the class together and invite representatives from each group to share key points of their debate.
- Ask follow-up questions such as:
- How did each group reach its conclusions?
- Were there any common themes across the groups?
- What surprised you about the outcomes shared?
- Teacher's Role:
- Facilitate the discussion by guiding the conversation and ensuring that all voices are heard.
- Use probing questions to deepen the discussion and connect the students' experiences to the lesson's central theme.
- Wrap-Up:
- Summarize the major points raised during the debate and highlight practical strategies for applying thoughtful decision-making in everyday life.
- Remind students of the importance of reflection and how each decision, whether impulsive or thoughtful, contributes to personal growth.
Outcome: By engaging in the Consequences Debate, students will be able to critically analyze real-life scenarios, share personal experiences, and articulate how impulse control and thoughtful decision-making can impact outcomes. This discussion supports the overall goal of the session: learning to evaluate decisions for better future results.
Cool Down
Personal Reflection
As we come to the end of "Is It Worth It?", take a few minutes to think back on what we've learned today about making decisions. In this cool-down activity, you'll reflect on your own experiences and consider ways you can apply thoughtful decision-making in your everyday life.
Reflection Prompt
Think of a time when you acted impulsively. Write about the situation and describe the outcome. Now, imagine how the situation might have unfolded if you had paused to think before acting.
- What did you learn from this experience?
- How can you apply this lesson in the future?
Steps
- Write Your Reflection: Use the space below to write a few sentences or a short paragraph about your experience and insights.
- Share (Optional): If you feel comfortable, share your reflection with the class or in small groups. Focus on what you learned and how you plan to make better decisions in the future.
Remember, thoughtful decisions help us grow and learn from our experiences. Thank you for participating and reflecting on how you can make choices that lead to positive outcomes!
