Internet Safety Heroes Plan

Students will identify common online risks—cyberbullying, privacy breaches, and interactions with strangers—and practice strategies to protect themselves, empowering them to become responsible digital citizens.

As 6th graders increasingly use the Internet independently, understanding its risks and prevention strategies builds critical digital citizenship skills, reduces harm, and fosters safe online habits.

Objectives:

Welcome students and introduce yourself. Explain that today they'll become Internet Safety Heroes by learning how to recognize risks online and protect themselves. Outline the lesson flow.

Warm-Up Discussion

• Share one positive or negative online experience
• Listen to classmates’ stories
• Identify what risk(s) may have been involved

Kick off a warm-up discussion. Ask for a show of hands: Who has had a positive/negative online experience? Invite volunteers to share briefly. Note examples on the board and categorize them by type of risk.

Introduce the instructional video. Tell students to watch for examples of cyberbullying, privacy issues, and strangers online. Pause if any questions arise.

Group Scenario Activity

  1. Form groups of 3–4 students
  2. Review the Online Risk Scenario Cards
  3. Identify the risk in each scenario
  4. Propose safety measures to prevent the risk
  5. Prepare to share one scenario and your solution

Explain the group scenario activity. Assign groups of 3–4 and hand out the scenario cards. Circulate as they work to prompt deeper thinking.

Safe Browsing Tipsheet

Use this tipsheet as a quick reference whenever you’re online. Keep it nearby on your device, in your notebook, or share with family and friends!


1. Keep Your Passwords Private

  • Create strong passwords using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Never share your password with anyone, even friends.
  • Change your passwords regularly and avoid using the same password for every site.

2. Think Before You Share

  • Before posting or sending anything, ask yourself:
    • Could this hurt someone or me if it’s seen by the wrong person?
    • Am I sharing personal details (like my address, phone number, or school) that I shouldn’t?
  • Remember: what you share online stays online.

3. Block and Report

  • If someone is mean, threatening, or asking for personal information:
    1. Block them immediately.
    2. Report their behavior to the website/app.
    3. Tell a trusted adult right away.

4. Talk to a Trusted Adult

  • If something or someone makes you uncomfortable online, pause and reach out.
  • Trusted adults can help you decide what to do next and keep you safe.

Online Risk Scenario Cards

Use these scenario cards in your group activity to identify risks and propose safety strategies. In your groups, read each scenario, discuss the questions, and prepare to share your answers.


Card 1: Stranger Requests Personal Info

Scenario: You get a friend request on a social app from someone you’ve never met. After you accept, they ask where you live and what school you attend.

Questions:

  1. What online risk is this?
  2. What steps would you take to stay safe?

Card 2: Suspicious Link in Chat

Scenario: During a group chat, a classmate shares a link claiming “Free game loot!” You click it, and it asks you to enter your login credentials.

Questions:

  1. What type of risk might this be?
  2. How can you verify whether the link is safe?

Card 3: Embarrassing Photo Shared

Scenario: A friend tags you in an unflattering photo on social media without asking. Other classmates start commenting and sharing it.

Questions:

  1. What privacy or emotional risks are involved?
  2. What actions can you take to protect your privacy and feelings?

Card 4: Cyberbullying in Group Message

Card 5: Fake Giveaway Scam

Scenario: You see a post offering a free tablet if you share the post and tag five friends. The page looks official, but you’ve never heard of the company.

  2. How would you verify the offer and protect yourself and friends?

Card 6: Location Sharing by Accident

Scenario: You post a story on a social app and don’t realize your live location is visible to all your followers.
