Internet Safety 101

Introduce basic internet safety concepts

This lesson introduces 6th-8th grade students to basic internet safety concepts including recognizing cyberbullying, protecting personal information, and creating strong passwords. By learning these skills, students will be better equipped to navigate the internet safely and responsibly.

Introduction

Recognizing Cyberbullying

15 mins

Define cyberbullying and provide examples.
Discuss the impact of cyberbullying on individuals.
Show a short video or provide a scenario that illustrates cyberbullying.
Facilitate a group discussion using discussion questions on recognizing and dealing with cyberbullying.

Protecting Personal Information

15 mins

Explain the importance of protecting personal information online.
Provide examples of personal information that should be kept private.
Discuss potential risks of sharing personal information.
Have students complete a worksheet that helps them identify personal information and understand the risks of sharing it online.

Step 4

Creating Strong Passwords

15 mins

Explain the importance of having strong passwords.
Provide guidelines for creating strong passwords (use of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, etc.).
Conduct a small activity where students create their own strong passwords and check them against a provided checklist.
