One-On-One Session • 30 Minutes • Tier 3 Intervention
Building Emotional Intelligence Through Respectful Interactions
Welcome the student. Introduce the title slide to set the tone and explain that you’ll explore respect and self-management over the next 30 minutes.
What Is Respect?
Respect means recognizing and valuing others’ feelings, opinions, and boundaries. It’s shown through active listening, kind words, and fair treatment.
Ask: “What does respect mean to you?” Note the student’s ideas. Introduce a working definition.
Examples of Respectful Behaviors
• Listening without interrupting
• Using polite language (please, thank you)
• Giving others personal space
• Acknowledging different opinions
• Keeping a calm tone
Review each example. Then invite the student to share additional respectful behaviors they’ve seen or used. Record ideas in the journal.
Reflect on a Challenging Interaction
- Describe a recent situation where respect was tested.
- What did you do or say?
- How did the other person respond?
- What could you do differently to show respect?
Record your thoughts in the Respect Reflection Prompts Journal.
Use prompts from the One-On-One Coaching Script to guide the student through a specific past interaction. Encourage honest reflection and journal entries.
Develop Your Action Plan
Choose 2–3 self-management strategies:
• I will pause and count to three before responding.
• I will use “I feel” statements when upset.
• I will take deep breaths to stay calm.
Make each goal Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Help the student translate reflections into concrete, manageable steps. Model a SMART goal.
