Lesson Plan

Think Before You Act

Students will learn to identify their impulses and practice strategies to pause, think, and choose a more appropriate action.

Developing impulse control helps students make better decisions, improve their relationships, and succeed in their learning environment. This lesson provides practical tools for everyday situations.

Audience

4th Grade Group

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Interactive discussion, visual aids, a game, and personal reflection to practice impulse control.

Materials

Stop & Go Signals (slide-deck), Impulse Island Adventure (game), and My Moment of Pause (journal)

Prep

Preparation Steps

15 minutes

Step 1

Introduction: What's an Impulse?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students: "Have you ever done something without really thinking first? What happened?"
    - Introduce the concept of an impulse: a quick feeling or urge to do something without planning.
    - Explain that today they will become "Impulse Control Heroes" by learning how to pause and think.

Step 2

Understanding Stop & Go Signals

7 minutes

  • Present the Stop & Go Signals Slide Deck.
    - Go through each slide, discussing what a "Stop" signal feels like in their body (e.g., racing heart, urge to yell) and what a "Go" signal involves (e.g., taking a deep breath, counting to three, thinking of consequences).
    - Engage students with examples relevant to their school day (e.g., blurting out, grabbing a toy).

Step 3

Impulse Island Adventure Game

10 minutes

  • Introduce the Impulse Island Adventure Game.
    - Explain the rules: Students will encounter scenarios where they need to use their "Stop & Go Signals." Successful application earns a point or a token.
    - Facilitate the game, providing encouragement and guiding students through the decision-making process for each scenario.

Step 4

My Moment of Pause Reflection

5 minutes

  • Distribute the My Moment of Pause Journal.
    - Instruct students to write or draw about a time they successfully used a "Stop & Go Signal" or a time they wish they had.
    - Encourage sharing if students feel comfortable.

Step 5

Wrap-up and Hero Badges

3 minutes

  • Recap the main strategies learned.
    - Congratulate students on being "Impulse Control Heroes."
    - Optionally, give each student a small "Impulse Control Hero" badge or sticker.

Impulse Control Heroes!

Are you ready to become an Impulse Control Hero?

Today, we'll learn how to:

  • Pause when you feel a strong urge.
  • Think about what to do next.
  • Choose the best action!

Welcome students and introduce the idea of impulses. Ask them for quick examples of when they might act without thinking.

What's an Impulse?

It's a strong, sudden feeling or urge to do something without thinking first!

  • Wanting to grab the last cookie.
  • Yelling out an answer in class.
  • Pushing ahead in line.

Explain what an 'impulse' is using simple, kid-friendly language. Emphasize that everyone has them!

Stop! Recognize Your Impulse

Your body gives you clues!

  • Red Light Feelings:
    • Heart beating fast?
    • Feeling super excited or super mad?
    • Hands clenched?

When you feel these, it's time to STOP!

Introduce the 'Stop' signal. Ask students what it feels like in their body when they have a strong impulse. Guide them to recognize these physical cues.

Go! What's Your Plan?

Once you stop, you can choose to GO in a good direction!

  • Take 3 Deep Breaths
  • Count to 5 (or 10!) in your head.
  • Think: What will happen if I act now? What are other choices?
  • Ask for help if you need it.

Introduce the 'Go' signal strategies. Brainstorm with students what they can do to pause. Deep breaths are a great starting point.

Let's Practice: Scenario 1

You're playing a game, and your friend accidentally knocks over your tower.

  • STOP! What do you feel?
  • GO! What can you do instead of yelling?

Provide a simple scenario and ask students to practice identifying the 'Stop' and 'Go' steps. Encourage discussion.

Let's Practice: Scenario 2

The teacher asks a question, and you know the answer! You feel like you HAVE to shout it out!

  • STOP! What does your body tell you?
  • GO! How can you share your answer appropriately?

Provide another scenario. Emphasize that taking a moment can change the outcome.

You Are Impulse Control Heroes!

Remember the STOP & GO strategy:

  1. STOP when you feel an impulse.
  2. THINK about your choices.
  3. CHOOSE the best action.

Keep practicing, and you'll be amazing Impulse Control Heroes!

Summarize the key takeaway and encourage them to use these skills throughout the day. Remind them they are heroes!

Prompt 2: My Go-To Strategy

What is one "GO" strategy that works best for you when you need to pause and think? (For example: deep breaths, counting, thinking of consequences, asking for help.) Describe how you use it.

Prompt 3: Hero in Action

Imagine a future situation where you might feel a strong impulse (e.g., getting frustrated during a group project, seeing someone take your turn). How will you use your "Stop & Go Signals" to be an Impulse Control Hero in that moment?

Drawing Space: My Impulse Control Shield

Draw a shield that represents your ability to control impulses. What symbols or colors would you use to show your strength in pausing, thinking, and choosing?

  • Optional: A simple game board drawing of an island path with spaces

How to Play:

  1. The teacher will read aloud a scenario card.
  2. Students will take turns identifying the "STOP" signal (what impulse they might feel) and then describing their "GO" strategy (what they would do to pause, think, and choose).
  3. If a student successfully identifies a clear "Stop" and "Go" strategy, they earn an "Impulse Control Gem."
  4. The game continues through the scenarios, giving everyone a chance to practice.

Scenario Cards:

Scenario 1: The Chatterbox Classroom

The teacher is giving important instructions for a fun art project, and your friend sitting next to you starts whispering silly jokes. You really want to laugh and whisper back!

STOP! What does your body tell you? What's the impulse?

GO! What's your strategy to stay focused and not interrupt?

Scenario 2: The Line Jumper

You are all lined up to go to recess, and someone suddenly pushes past you to get to the front of the line. You feel a surge of anger and want to push them back!

STOP! What does your body tell you? What's the impulse?

GO! What's your strategy to handle this situation calmly?

Scenario 3: The Broken Promise

You and a classmate planned to work on a project together during free time. But when free time comes, your classmate decides to play with someone else instead. You feel hurt and want to loudly tell them they're mean!

STOP! What does your body tell you? What's the impulse?

GO! What's your strategy to deal with your feelings and the situation?

Scenario 4: The Exciting Answer

The teacher asks a question in class, and you know the answer! You feel so excited you want to shout it out right away!

STOP! What does your body tell you? What's the impulse?

GO! What's your strategy to share your answer appropriately?

Scenario 5: The Unfair Game

You are playing a board game with your group, and you think another student cheated. You feel frustrated and want to accuse them loudly.

STOP! What does your body tell you? What's the impulse?

GO! What's your strategy to address your concern in a fair way?
