Teach impulse control skills

This lesson uses a game-based approach to teach 1st-grade students about impulse control. Through a fun and interactive game, students will learn to recognize and manage their impulses, followed by a guided discussion to reinforce the concepts. Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Welcome the students and introduce the topic of impulse control.
Explain that today they will play a game to learn how to control their impulses and listen to a story about a fish named Puffy.

Impulse Control Game

10 mins

Distribute the Impulse Control Picture Cards to the students.
Explain the rules: Students will take turns drawing a card and acting out the scenario depicted in the picture while the others guess the impulse control strategy being used.
Encourage students to think about how they would handle each situation.

Impulse Control Simon Says

Play a game of 'Impulse Control Simon Says.'
Give commands, but students should only follow them if prefaced with 'Simon says.'
Use commands that require self-control, such as 'Simon says stand still' or 'Simon says raise your hand.'

Play the video The Fish and His Puffy Temper.
