Hygiene Habits Handbook Plan
Students will learn and understand the importance of essential personal hygiene practices during puberty, including showering, deodorant use, and dental care, to maintain health and prevent common issues.
Practicing good personal hygiene is crucial for physical health, self-confidence, and social well-being, especially as bodies change during puberty. This lesson provides practical skills to help students feel confident and healthy.

Prep
Preparation
15 minutes
- Review all generated materials: the Super Clean Slides, the Hygiene Quest Board Game, and My Daily Hygiene Checklist.
- Gather game pieces and dice for the board game.
- Ensure projector/whiteboard is set up for slides.
- Print copies of My Daily Hygiene Checklist for each student.
Step 1
Warm-Up: What's Your Hygiene Superpower?
5 minutes
- Begin by asking students: "What's one thing you do every day to feel fresh and clean?" (e.g., brush teeth, wash hands).
- Briefly discuss their responses, highlighting that these are all 'hygiene superpowers' that help them feel good.
- Transition by explaining that today, they'll become 'Hygiene Heroes' by learning even more about taking care of their bodies, especially as they grow.
Step 2
Introducing Puberty & Hygiene (Slides & Discussion)
15 minutes
- Present the Super Clean Slides (Slides 1-5).
- Slide 1: Title Slide - Hygiene Heroes. Introduce the lesson title and topic.
- Slide 2: Growing Up! Briefly explain that as they get older, their bodies change, and these changes mean new hygiene needs.
- Slide 3: Why Hygiene Matters. Discuss the importance of hygiene for health, feeling good, and confidence. Ask: "How does good hygiene make you feel?"
- Slide 4: Shower Power. Explain why regular showering is important, especially during puberty. Discuss frequency and using soap.
- Slide 5: Deodorant Debrief. Introduce deodorant and its purpose. Explain when and how to use it. Address common misconceptions.
- Discussion: After each key point, pause for quick questions and reinforce understanding. Encourage students to share any questions or experiences respectfully.
Step 3
Hygiene Quest Board Game
15 minutes
- Divide students into small groups (3-4 students per group).
- Distribute one Hygiene Quest Board Game and game pieces/dice to each group.
- Explain the game rules: Students roll the dice, move their pieces, and answer questions or complete challenges related to hygiene practices presented on the board.
- Circulate among groups to facilitate, answer questions, and ensure discussions are productive. Encourage cooperative play and sharing knowledge.
Step 4
My Daily Hygiene Checklist
7 minutes
- Bring the class back together.
- Distribute My Daily Hygiene Checklist to each student.
- Explain that this checklist is a tool to help them remember their daily hygiene routines.
- Have students fill in a few items they already do and a few new habits they want to try from what they learned today.
- Encourage them to take it home and use it as a reminder.

• Why is showering important now?
• Your body starts to produce more sweat and oils.
• How often should you shower?
• Daily, especially after exercise or if you feel sweaty.
• Don't forget the soap and shampoo!
• Clean your whole body and hair.
Focus on the 'why' behind showering. Discuss frequency, especially as they become more active or during puberty. Mention using soap all over their body.
Deodorant Debrief: Smell Good, Feel Great!
• What is deodorant?
• It helps you smell fresh by covering up body odor.
• When should you start using it?
• When you notice body odor, usually during puberty.
• How do you use it?
• Apply to clean, dry underarms every morning.
Introduce deodorant. Explain it's for underarms to help with sweat and odor. Clarify it's different from antiperspirant. Discuss when to start using it.
Smile Bright: Dental Care Done Right!
• Keep those pearly whites shining!
• Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes.
• Don't forget to floss daily!
• Why is dental hygiene important?
• Prevents cavities and keeps your breath fresh.
Reinforce dental care. Mention brushing twice a day and flossing. Briefly touch on healthy eating for dental health.

• Your body is changing, and that's amazing!
• Good hygiene helps you stay healthy, confident, and fresh.
• Shower regularly, use deodorant, and brush/floss your teeth.

- 1 game piece per player (can be small erasers, coins, etc.)
How to Play
- All players start at the "Start Here" space.
- Take turns rolling the die and moving your game piece the corresponding number of spaces.
- Read the instruction or answer the question on the space you land on.
- If you answer correctly or follow the instruction, you stay on the space. If not, move back to your previous space.
- The first player to reach the "Freshness Finish Line" wins!
