Hygiene Heroes Game Plan

Students will be able to identify and describe at least three daily hygiene practices and understand their importance for staying healthy.

Learning about hygiene is crucial for students to develop healthy habits that prevent the spread of germs and promote overall well-being. This lesson makes it fun and memorable!

Step 1

Introduction: What are Hygiene Heroes?

5 minutes

  • Begin with a warm greeting and introduce the concept of 'Hygiene Heroes.'
    - Ask students what they think hygiene means.
    - Use the first few slides of the Meet the Hygiene Heroes Slide Deck to introduce the topic and the importance of staying clean and healthy.

Step 2

Meet the Hygiene Heroes (Slide Deck & Discussion)

10 minutes

  • Go through the Meet the Hygiene Heroes Slide Deck, discussing each hygiene practice (handwashing, brushing teeth, bathing, etc.).
    - Encourage students to share their own experiences with these habits.
    - Ask guiding questions like: 'Why is it important to wash our hands?' or 'When should we brush our teeth?'

Step 3

Hygiene Habit Challenge Game

15 minutes

  • Explain the rules of the Hygiene Habit Challenge Game.
    - Divide students into small groups or play as a whole class.
    - Facilitate the game, reading out challenges and having students act them out or answer questions.
    - Award points or small prizes for correct answers and enthusiastic participation.

Wrap-Up & Reflection

5 minutes

  • Distribute the My Favorite Hygiene Habit Cool-Down worksheet.
    - Have students complete the cool-down activity, reflecting on their favorite hygiene habit.
    - Briefly review the main hygiene practices learned.
    - Reinforce the idea that everyone can be a Hygiene Hero by practicing good habits.

What does it mean to be a Hygiene Hero?

It means keeping ourselves clean and healthy so we can play, learn, and feel great!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting topic of becoming Hygiene Heroes! Ask them what they think it means to be a hero and how it might relate to staying clean.

What is Hygiene?

Hygiene is how we keep our bodies clean and healthy every day.

It helps us fight off tiny, invisible germs!

Why is it important to be clean?

Explain that hygiene is all about taking care of our bodies to stay healthy and stop germs from spreading. Ask students for examples of things they do to stay clean.

Hero 1: Handwashing Harry!

Superpower: Squeaky Clean Hands!

  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Scrub for 20 seconds (sing 'Happy Birthday' twice!)
  • When should Handwashing Harry wash his hands?
    • Before eating
    • After using the restroom
    • After playing outside
    • After coughing or sneezing

Introduce the first hero: Handwashing Harry. Emphasize the importance of washing hands with soap and water, especially at key times.

Hero 2: Brushing Betty!

Superpower: Sparkling Smile!

  • Brush your teeth in the morning and before bed.
  • Use toothpaste and a toothbrush.
  • Brush all your teeth, front and back, top and bottom.
  • Why does Brushing Betty brush her teeth?

Introduce Brushing Betty and discuss the importance of brushing teeth twice a day to keep them strong and prevent cavities.

Hero 3: Showering Shelly!

Superpower: Fresh & Clean Body!

  • Take a bath or shower regularly.
  • Use soap to wash your body.
  • Wash your hair with shampoo.
  • How does Showering Shelly feel after a bath or shower?

Introduce Showering Shelly and explain why regular bathing is important for body cleanliness.

Hero 4: Coughing Carl!

Superpower: Stopping Germs!

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • Use your elbow, not your hands!
  • Throw tissues in the trash right away.
  • Why is it important for Coughing Carl to cover his coughs and sneezes?

Introduce Coughing Carl and teach students the 'sleeve sneeze' or 'vampire cough' to prevent germ spread.

You Can Be a Hygiene Hero Too!

Remember these awesome habits:

  • Wash your hands!
  • Brush your teeth!
  • Take a bath or shower!
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes!

Hygiene Habit Challenge: Become a Super Clean Hero!

Game Instructions:

  1. Objective: Teams or individual students will earn points by correctly identifying and demonstrating good hygiene habits.
  2. Setup: Print and cut out the Hygiene Habit Challenge Game Cards. Place them face down in a pile.
  3. How to Play:
    • Divide the class into 2-3 teams (or play individually, if preferred).
    • Each team takes turns drawing a card.
    • The student who drew the card must either act out the hygiene habit, explain why it's important, or answer a question related to it, as instructed on the card.
    • If they answer or demonstrate correctly, their team earns 1 point.
    • If they struggle, other team members can help (optional, for half a point).
    • The team with the most points at the end wins!
