Hygiene Habits: Global Good

Taking care of ourselves, inside and out!

Welcome students and introduce the topic. Ask them to think about what hygiene means to them.

What is Hygiene?

  • Hygiene means taking care of our bodies to stay healthy and clean.
  • It's about preventing germs and feeling our best.
  • Good hygiene helps us stay strong and happy!

Ask students: What does 'hygiene' mean? Why is it important? Guide them towards answers related to health, feeling good, and preventing sickness.

Why is Hygiene Important?

  • Health: Stops germs from spreading and keeps us from getting sick.
  • Feeling Good: Helps us feel fresh, confident, and ready for the day.
  • Social: Shows respect for ourselves and others around us.

Discuss how good hygiene benefits us. Encourage examples like 'no bad smells,' 'fewer sick days,' 'more confidence.'

Hygiene Around the World

  • Did you know hygiene practices can be different depending on where you live or your family's culture?
  • What might be common in one country could be new in another.
  • All these practices help people stay clean and healthy!

Introduce the idea that hygiene practices can differ across cultures. Emphasize that there's no single 'right' way, and all are valid. Briefly mention some examples like using bidets in some cultures instead of just toilet paper, or different bathing customs.

Different Ways to Stay Clean

  • Some cultures use different tools for cleaning teeth.
  • Bathing rituals can vary greatly.
  • What seems normal to us might be unique to others, and that's okay!

Prompt students to think about their own routines. Lead into the 'Global Hygiene Scenarios' activity.

Our Daily Hygiene Habits

  • Handwashing: Before eating, after bathroom, after playing.
  • Bathing/Showering: Regularly to clean skin and hair.
  • Teeth Brushing: At least twice a day.
  • Clean Clothes: Wearing fresh clothes daily.

Explain the importance of daily habits. Reinforce key actions.

Remembering What We Learned

  • Hygiene keeps us healthy and happy.
  • There are many ways to practice hygiene, and different cultures do things differently.
  • Respecting everyone's practices is important.
  • What's one thing you'll take away from today?

Summarize the lesson and transition to the Cool-Down activity.

Activity

Activity: Global Hygiene Scenarios

Instructions: Read each scenario. Discuss with your group or partner how you would respond respectfully, keeping in mind that different cultures have different ways of practicing hygiene.

Scenario 1: New Friend, New Habits

Your new classmate, Omar, just moved from a different country. You notice that after using the restroom, he uses a small pitcher of water to clean himself instead of just toilet paper, which is what you're used to. Some other kids whisper and giggle. How would you explain to the other kids that Omar's way is just a different, equally valid way of practicing hygiene?

Scenario 2: Different Scents

During gym class, you notice that some of your classmates have a different body odor than what you are used to, perhaps due to different bathing customs or dietary habits in their families. How can you ensure everyone feels comfortable and respected, and what would you tell a friend who might make a negative comment?

Scenario 3: Hair Care Traditions

Your friend, Maya, has long, braided hair that her family takes several hours to wash and re-braid once a week. You usually wash your hair every day. She tells you she sometimes feels self-conscious because her routine is so different. What could you say to Maya to make her feel proud of her family's tradition and help others understand it?
