For Schools

Lesson Plan

Sleep and Super Energy

Students will be able to identify how adequate sleep affects their energy levels, focus, and mood throughout the day.

Understanding the direct link between sleep and daily performance empowers students to prioritize healthy sleep habits, improving their overall well-being and academic success.

Audience

3rd Grade

Time

45 minutes

Approach

Interactive discussion, visual aids, and a hands-on activity.

Materials

Recharge Your Inner Battery Slide Deck, Energy Level Bar Graph Activity, and My Sleep-Powered Day Journal

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Sleep and Super Energy Lesson Plan and all linked materials.
    - Prepare a whiteboard or projector for the Recharge Your Inner Battery Slide Deck.
    - Print enough copies of the Energy Level Bar Graph Activity for each student.
    - Print enough copies of the My Sleep-Powered Day Journal for each student.

Step 1

Warm-Up: My Favorite Activities (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Ask students: "What are some of your favorite things to do during the day? (e.g., playing, reading, sports, learning at school)"
    - Briefly discuss how they get the energy to do these things.

Step 2

Introduction: Recharge Your Inner Battery (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Introduce the concept of sleep as recharging our bodies and brains, like charging a phone battery.
    - Use the Recharge Your Inner Battery Slide Deck to guide a discussion on what sleep is and why it's important for energy, focus, and mood.
    - Ask questions like: "What happens if your phone battery runs out? What happens if you don't get enough sleep?"

Step 3

Activity: Energy Level Bar Graph (20 minutes)

20 minutes

  • Distribute the Energy Level Bar Graph Activity.
    - Explain the activity: Students will draw two bar graphs. One shows their energy, focus, and mood on a day after good sleep, and the other shows it after not enough sleep.
    - Guide them through filling out the graphs, encouraging them to think about real-life experiences.
    - Circulate to offer support and answer questions.

Step 4

Reflection & Share (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Have a few students share their bar graphs (voluntarily) and explain the differences they observed.
    - Lead a brief class discussion on the clear impact of sleep on their daily lives.

Step 5

Cool-Down: My Sleep-Powered Day (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Introduce the My Sleep-Powered Day Journal as a way to reflect further.
    - Explain that they will take it home and think about their sleep habits and how they feel. This can be a short homework assignment or a follow-up for the next day.

Recharge Your Inner Battery: How Sleep Fuels Your Day!

Have you ever felt tired at school? 😴
Or super focused and ready to learn? 💪
What makes the difference?

Welcome students and get them thinking about how they feel throughout the day. Connect to the warm-up activity.

What is Sleep?

Sleep is like charging your body's battery! 🔋
It's when your body and brain get a chance to:
- Rest and repair
- Grow stronger
- Store memories
- Get ready for tomorrow!

Explain sleep in simple terms – not just closing eyes, but resting for the whole body and brain.

Why is Sleep So Important?

Good sleep helps you have:
1. Super Energy! For playing, running, and exploring. ⚡
2. Laser Focus! For learning, solving puzzles, and reading. 🧠
3. Happy Moods! For being a good friend and feeling calm. 😊

Connect sleep to tangible daily experiences: energy for play, focus for school, and a good mood for friends.

How Much Sleep Do YOU Need?

For 3rd graders, doctors say you need:
9-12 hours of sleep every single night! 🌙
That's like going to bed when it's dark and waking up when the sun is bright!

Provide a clear, age-appropriate guideline for how much sleep 3rd graders need. Emphasize it's a lot!

Tips for a Super Sleep! 🛌

To get your best sleep:
- Have a regular bedtime (even on weekends!).
- Make your room dark and quiet. 🤫
- Read a book or take a warm bath before bed. 🛀📖
- Avoid screens (tablets, phones, TV) right before bed. 📵

Give practical, simple tips for improving sleep. Emphasize routines.

Sleep = Your Daily Super Fuel!

Remember:
Good sleep helps you be your best self every day!
What will you do to get enough sleep tonight?

Reinforce the main idea: sleep is fuel. Encourage them to apply this knowledge.
