Students will learn and practice collaborative problem-solving skills by engaging in guided role-plays and group discussions that emphasize effective communication and empathy.

Step 1

Introduction and Discussion

10 minutes

  • Begin with a discussion on conflict resolution by asking students to share examples of conflicts they have experienced.
  • Introduce basic strategies for resolving disagreements using the Teamwork and Communication slide deck.
  • Emphasize the importance of listening and respectful dialogue.

Step 2

Role-Playing Activity

20 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups and assign each a scenario from the Role-Playing Scenarios document.

How Do We Solve Problems Together?

Lesson Overview

The session is designed for a 3rd grade class and lasts 45 minutes. Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction and Discussion (10 minutes)

  • Begin with an open discussion about conflict resolution. Ask students to share any experiences they have had where a disagreement was resolved through teamwork.


  • Use the Teamwork and Communication slide deck to introduce the basic concepts of collaboration and communication. Highlight key points such as listening, sharing ideas, and respecting each other’s opinions.

2. Role-Playing Activity (20 minutes)

  • Divide students into small groups for the role-playing exercise. Each group will receive a scenario from the Role-Playing Scenarios activity.



  • In their groups, students will act out the scenario, ensuring they practice using clear communication and empathy to resolve the conflict.

3. Reflect and Share Discussion (10 minutes)

  • Gather the students back together for a group discussion. Ask them what strategies worked during their role-plays and how they felt while using these strategies.

4. Cool-Down and Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Conclude the lesson with a brief reflective exercise using the Problem-Solving Reflection cool-down guide.



  • Ask students to either write or draw one key idea they learned about solving problems together. This allows them to consolidate their understanding and express their thoughts creatively.
