Prep

Prepare Materials

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up: How Do You Know Someone Cares?

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students: "How do you know when someone in your family cares about you?"
    - Allow students to share a few quick examples. Write down some keywords on the board.

Step 2

Introducing Love Languages

10 minutes

  • Use the My Family's Love Language Slide Deck to introduce the five love languages (simplified for elementary students: Words of Appreciation, Helpful Actions, Special Time, Thoughtful Gifts, Gentle Touches).
    - For each 'love language,' provide simple, relatable examples that students can understand.
    - Ask students if they recognize any of these ways in their own families.

Step 3

Discussion: Our Family's Ways

15 minutes

  • Facilitate a class discussion using questions like:
    - "What are some ways your family shows you they care? Do they use words, actions, or something else?"
    - "What are some ways you show your family you care?"
    - "Can you think of a time when someone tried to show care, but you didn't quite understand it? How might knowing about 'love languages' help?"
    - Encourage respectful sharing and emphasize that all families show care differently.

Step 4

Activity: Acts of Kindness Challenge

10 minutes

  • Introduce the Acts of Kindness Challenge Activity.
    - Explain that students will choose one way to show care to a family member this week, based on what they learned about love languages.
    - Give students a moment to brainstorm a specific action they could take. They can jot it down on a piece of paper or a small whiteboard.

Step 5

Cool-Down: One New Idea

5 minutes

  • Ask students to share one new idea they have for showing care to a family member, or one thing they learned about how their family expresses care.
    - Conclude by reiterating that understanding and expressing care makes families stronger and happier.

How Do We Show We Care?

How do you know when someone in your family cares about you?

It feels good to know someone cares, right? Today, we're going to talk about different ways families show they care!

Welcome students and introduce the idea of showing care. Ask them how they know their family cares about them.

Different Ways to Show Care

Just like people speak different languages, we also 'speak' different 'care languages'!

What makes you feel cared for?
What makes your family feel cared for?

Let's explore some common ways people show they care.

Introduce the idea of 'love languages' as different ways people express and understand love/care.

1. Words of Appreciation

Using kind and loving words

  • "You did a great job!"
  • "I love you!"
  • "Thank you for helping."
  • A sweet note in your lunchbox.

Does your family use words to show they care?

Explain Words of Affirmation. Give examples like compliments, saying "I love you," or encouraging words.

2. Helpful Actions

Doing things to help others

  • Helping with dishes.
  • Making your bed.
  • Fixing something for you.
  • Someone cooking your favorite meal.

Does your family show care by doing helpful things?

Explain Acts of Service. Give examples like helping with chores, making breakfast, or running an errand.

3. Special Time

Spending focused time together

  • Playing a board game.
  • Reading a book together.
  • Going for a walk.
  • Talking and really listening.

Does your family set aside special time for you?

4. Thoughtful Gifts

Giving and receiving meaningful presents

  • A handmade drawing.
  • A flower picked from the garden.
  • A small treat.
  • A gift that reminds them of you.

Does your family give you thoughtful gifts?

Explain Receiving Gifts. Emphasize that it's not about expensive gifts, but thoughtful ones like a drawing, a picked flower, or a favorite snack.

5. Gentle Touches

Showing affection through touch

  • A warm hug.
  • A high-five.
  • Holding hands.
  • A gentle pat on the back.

Does your family show care with gentle touches?

Explain Physical Touch. Give examples like hugs, high-fives, or holding hands.

What's Your Family's Way?

We all show and feel care in different ways!

  • Some families use lots of words.
  • Some families love to do things for each other.
  • Some families treasure special time.
  • Some families give thoughtful little gifts.
  • Some families love hugs and high-fives.

There's no right or wrong way!

Summarize that everyone is different and that's okay. Encourage students to think about how they show care and how they receive it.

Your Challenge!

Now that we know different ways to show we care, it's your turn!

Your challenge is to choose ONE way to show a family member you care this week.

Think about what you learned today. What would make someone in your family feel truly cared for?

Introduce the Acts of Kindness Challenge. Explain they will choose one action to do for a family member.

Go Show You Care!

Choose one action from a 'care language' to try this week.

Think about:

  • Who will you show care to?
  • What will you do?

Let's make our families feel extra special!

Remind them to choose an action and reflect on it.
