How Can We Thrive Together?

A 90-minute workshop for elementary school parents on collaborative parenting, family engagement, goal-setting, and reflection.

Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself and share the workshop title, purpose, and outcomes.

Agenda

• Welcome & Icebreaker (10 min)
• Family Strengths Mapping (20 min)
• Collaborative Parenting Strategies (20 min)
• Goal-Setting Conversations (20 min)
• Reflection & Action Planning (15 min)
• Closing & Next Steps (5 min)

Walk through today’s agenda so parents know what to expect.

Icebreaker: Share a Strength

In pairs, share one thing your family does well. Then we’ll invite volunteers to share with the group.

Facilitate the icebreaker: ask each parent to share one family strength.

What Are Family Strengths?

Family strengths are qualities or practices that support your child’s growth (e.g., teamwork, resilience, creativity, routines). Recognizing these helps build on what’s already working.

Introduce the concept of family strengths and why identifying them matters.

Activity: Family Strengths Mapping

  1. Individually list three strengths on Family Strengths Mapping Activity.
  2. Form groups of 3–4 to combine lists on chart paper.
  3. Choose one strength to share with the whole group.

Explain the mapping activity and distribute worksheets.

Sample Strengths Map

[Visual of chart paper with overlapping circles showing shared strengths like “Supportive Communication,” “Fun Traditions,” and “Encouraging Curiosity.”]

Show a sample chart to guide parents during the activity.

Collaborative Parenting Strategies

Using your family strengths, explore strategies that enhance consistency, communication, and connection at home.

Transition to parenting strategies. Emphasize how leveraging strengths connects to strategies.

Strategy 1: Consistent Routines

• Establish predictable morning/evening routines
• Use simple charts or checklists
• Reinforce routines with positive acknowledgement

Discuss consistent routines: why they matter and how to establish them.

Strategy 2: Open Communication

• Hold regular family check-ins
• Ask open-ended questions (e.g., “What was the best part of your day?”)
• Listen actively without judgment

Explain open communication and give examples of prompts.

Strategy 3: Positive Reinforcement

• Notice and celebrate effort rather than just results
• Use specific praise (“I noticed how you helped your sibling today!”)
• Create a “strengths spotlight” board at home

Detail positive reinforcement and its impact on behavior.

Strategy 4: Co-Learning

• Spend 10–15 minutes daily reading or working on puzzles together
• Share what you’re learning as a parent
• Encourage questions and curiosity

Introduce co-learning as a way to support academic growth.

Why Goal-Setting Matters

Goals provide direction, build motivation, and help track progress. Engaging children in the process increases ownership and confidence.

Frame the importance of setting clear goals for your child’s development.

SMART Goals Framework

S – Specific (What exactly?)
M – Measurable (How will you know?)
A – Achievable (Is it realistic?)
R – Relevant (Why is it important?)
T – Time-bound (By when?)

Explain SMART goals framework with examples.

Practice: Goal-Setting Conversations

• Pair up and pick one academic or social goal for your child
• Use prompts from Goal-Setting Conversations Guide
• Apply the SMART criteria
• Role-play and give each other feedback

Prepare parents for the paired exercise.

Reflection & Action Planning

Use the Reflection Prompts for Parents Journal to answer: 1) What are my key takeaways? 2) How will I integrate strategies into daily routines? 3) What are my short-term and long-term goals?

Introduce reflection & action planning. Distribute journals.

Closing & Next Steps

• Recap: Strengths, Strategies, Goals, Reflection
• Additional Resources: parenting workshops, school contacts
• Contact us for ongoing support and coaching

Summarize key insights and share additional resources.

Thank You!

We appreciate your participation. Together, we’ll help our children thrive. Questions or feedback?

Thank the group and invite final questions or feedback.

  1. Strength 1:
Describe how this strength shows up in your family:

  2. Strength 2:
Describe how this strength shows up in your family:

  3. Strength 3:
Describe how this strength shows up in your family:

Part 2: Group Mapping

In groups of 3–4, compare your lists and complete the chart below. Identify which strengths appear most often and how you might leverage them at home or in school.

StrengthHow We See It in Our FamiliesWays to Leverage at Home/School

Part 3: Group Share

Which strength did your group choose to highlight? Why?

Tip: Look for common themes and consider how these strengths can support our children’s learning and well-being.

Discussion

Goal-Setting Conversations Guide

Objective

Support parents in crafting and practicing one SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goal-setting conversation for their child.

Materials

Instructions for Pairs (20 minutes)

  1. Form pairs. Take turns as Speaker (sets the goal) and Listener (asks guiding questions).
  2. Use each section below to co-create a SMART goal. Record your responses on this sheet.
  3. Role-play your scripted conversation; pause after each SMART element to offer feedback.
  4. Switch roles and repeat with a new goal or refine the first one.

Discussion Prompts

1. Specific: Define the Focus

  • Prompt: "What is one specific skill or behavior you want your child to work on?"

  • Follow-up: "Why did you choose this particular focus right now?"

2. Measurable: Identify Indicators of Success

  • Prompt: "How will you know when your child is making progress?"

  • Follow-up: "What evidence or examples will show success? (e.g., reading pages, completed chores)"

3. Achievable: Ensure Realism

  • Prompt: "Is this goal realistic given your child’s current routine and abilities?"

  • Follow-up: "What adjustments or supports might make it more achievable?"

4. Relevant: Connect to Values

  • Prompt: "Why is this goal meaningful for your child’s growth or well-being?"

  • Follow-up: "How does it connect to your family strengths (e.g., teamwork, resilience)?"

5. Time-Bound: Set a Timeline

  • Prompt: "By what date or within what time frame do you hope to achieve this goal?"

  • Follow-up: "What short-term check-in points will you use to stay on track?"

Role-Play & Feedback

  1. Speaker: Lead a 2-minute conversation using your drafted SMART goal.
Listener: Note where prompts flowed well and where you need more clarity.
  2. Switch roles and repeat with your partner’s goal.
  3. Debrief together: What felt most natural? Which part was challenging?

Reflection & Next Steps

After both rounds, spend 5 minutes writing in your Reflection Prompts for Parents Journal:

  1. One insight you gained about goal-setting.
  2. How you will integrate this process into your weekly family routine.
  3. Any supports or resources you may seek next.

Thank you for engaging in Goal-Setting Conversations. Your thoughtful planning and practice will help your child build confidence and track progress on meaningful goals!
