Welcome students and set a positive, open tone. Explain that it's normal to feel many things during the holidays. Encourage participation but emphasize that sharing is optional.
How do you feel about the holidays?
- Excited?
- Stressed?
- Happy?
- Overwhelmed?
- **A little bit of everything?
Ask students to share one word or an emoji that describes how they generally feel about the upcoming holidays. Write some common emotions on the board. Validate all responses. Ask: Why do you think we feel so many different things?
What are Expectations?
It's what we think or hope will happen.
During the holidays, we often have expectations about:
- Gifts ๐
- Family Gatherings ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ
- Food & Traditions ๐ฅง๐
- Time off School ๐
- Travel โ๏ธ
Define expectations. Give examples like expecting a specific gift, expecting perfect family harmony, or expecting a snow day. Ask students for their own examples. Emphasize that expectations aren't bad, but unrealistic ones can lead to disappointment.
