Holiday Harmony: Stress-Free Season Strategies

Welcome! Let's make this holiday season more peaceful and enjoyable.

Welcome the group and introduce the purpose of the session: to equip them with tools for a less stressful holiday season.

What's Your Holiday Stressor?

Family gatherings, financial pressures, time crunch, gift shopping, travel, maintaining traditions... sound familiar?

Engage participants by asking them to briefly share what typically makes the holidays stressful for them. Acknowledge common themes without dwelling on negatives.

Understanding Holiday Stress

Stress is normal, but too much can steal your joy.
We'll explore ways to manage and reduce holiday pressures.

Explain that stress is a natural response but can be managed. Introduce the idea of proactive coping strategies.

Strategy 1: Set Realistic Expectations

It doesn't have to be perfect. Focus on what truly matters to you.

Discuss the importance of defining what a 'successful' holiday looks like to them, not based on external expectations.

Strategy 2: Establish Boundaries

It's okay to say no. Protect your time, energy, and peace of mind.

Explain why saying 'no' is important for protecting time and energy. Give examples of how to politely decline or limit commitments.

Strategy 3: Financial Planning & Gifting

Plan your spending. Focus on presence, not just presents.

Offer tips for creating a budget and sticking to it. Discuss creative, less expensive gift or activity ideas.

Strategy 4: Time Management & Prioritization

You don't have to do it all. Prioritize, delegate, and schedule relaxation.

Suggest practical time management techniques: delegating, prioritizing, and scheduling downtime. Emphasize that 'doing less' is often 'doing more' for well-being.

Strategy 5: Embrace Mindfulness

Be present. Mindfulness helps you stay calm amidst the chaos.

Introduce the concept of mindfulness. Explain that the upcoming activity will give them a direct experience.

Strategy 6: Cultivate Gratitude

Focus on the good. A grateful heart finds joy in simple moments.

Briefly introduce the Gratitude Journal and how cultivating appreciation can shift perspective, especially during challenging times.

Activity

Mindfulness Moment Practice: A Mini-Break for Calm

Take a few moments to bring your attention to the present. This practice can be done anywhere, anytime you need a moment of calm.

Instructions:

  1. Find Your Spot: Settle into a comfortable position, either sitting or standing. Allow your shoulders to relax down and away from your ears.

  2. Close Your Eyes (or Soften Gaze): If comfortable, gently close your eyes. Otherwise, soften your gaze downward.

  3. Notice Your Breath (1 minute): Bring your attention to your breath. Feel the natural rise and fall of your chest or abdomen. Don't try to change your breath, just notice it. Is it shallow or deep? Fast or slow? Simply observe.

  4. Listen to Sounds (1 minute): Expand your awareness to include the sounds around you. Notice sounds near and far, without labeling them as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant. Just listen.

  5. Body Scan (1 minute): Gently bring your attention to your body, starting from the top of your head and slowly moving down to your toes. Notice any sensations – warmth, coolness, tension, relaxation. Acknowledge them without judgment.

  6. Return to the Present: When you're ready, slowly open your eyes. Take a moment to notice how you feel. Carry this sense of calm with you into your next activity.

Reflection Questions (Optional):

  • What did you notice during this short mindfulness practice?

  • How might you incorporate these

  3. People Power: Who is someone in your life you are especially grateful for this season, and why? How can you express that gratitude?

  4. Learning & Growth: What is one challenge you faced recently (holiday-related or not) that you learned something from, or that helped you grow? What did you learn?

Part 2: Nurturing Calm

  1. My Calm Corner: Describe a place (real or imagined) where you feel completely calm and at peace. What does it look like, sound like, feel like?

  2. De-Stress Rituals: What is one small, simple activity you can do for 5-10 minutes when you feel overwhelmed during the holidays? (e.g., listen to music, step outside, read a book, deep breathing)
