Hispanic Rhythms and Moves

Learn about Hispanic music and basic dance steps

This lesson will introduce students to various Hispanic music genres and dance styles. Students will participate in a dance workshop to learn basic steps and movements. This lesson is important as it exposes students to different cultures, promotes physical activity, and enhances their appreciation for music and dance.

Learn about Hispanic music and basic dance steps

Materials

Speakers, Pre-selected Hispanic music tracks, Open space for dancing, and Printed discussion questions

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Gather the students in a circle and explain that today they will learn about Hispanic music and dance. Discuss how music and dance are important parts of many cultures.

Step 2

Listening Session

5 mins

Play short clips of different Hispanic music genres (e.g., Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Flamenco). After each clip, ask the students how the music makes them feel and if they like it. This helps them engage with and appreciate the music.

Step 3

Dance Workshop

15 mins

Teach the students basic dance steps to one of the music genres. Break down the steps slowly and ensure everyone is following along. Play the music and allow the students to practice the steps. Encourage them to have fun and express themselves through dance.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

Gather the students back in a circle and ask them what their favorite part of the lesson was. Discuss how it felt to dance and listen to the music. Praise their efforts and encourage them to keep exploring different kinds of music and dance.
