Prep

Preparation

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-up & Introduction (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Begin by asking students what it means to 'help' someone. Facilitate a brief discussion.
    * Introduce the lesson by explaining that today they will learn about different people who help in our community and how they can be helpers too.

Step 2

Exploring Community Helpers (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Present the Who Helps Us Slides. Go through each slide, discussing the different community helpers and their roles. Encourage students to share if they know anyone in these roles or have seen these helpers in action.
    * Ask questions like, 'What does a firefighter do?' or 'How does a doctor help us?'

Step 3

Discussion: How Can We Help? (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Lead the students in the How Can We Help? Discussion. Guide them to brainstorm ways they can help at home, at school, and in their community. Write down their ideas on a whiteboard or chart paper.
    * Emphasize that even small acts of kindness are a form of helping.

Step 4

Activity: My Helping Hands (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Distribute the My Helping Hands Coloring Sheet to each student along with crayons or colored pencils.
    * Instruct students to color the hands and draw or write (with help) one way they can use their hands to help others. For example, 'I can help my mom clean up' or 'I can give a friend a high five.'
    * Collect the coloring sheets for display or to send home.
