Hello, Counselor! Lesson Plan

Students will meet the school counselor, learn her role in helping with feelings and solving problems, and feel comfortable approaching her for support.

Introducing the counselor builds trust, strengthens social-emotional skills, and helps children know where to turn when they need support, fostering a safe and connected classroom community.

Step 1

Welcome & Greetings

2 minutes

  • Invite students to sit in a circle and show the Counselor Photo Card.
  • Counselor waves and says, “Hello friends! I’m happy to meet you!”

Step 2

Who Is a Counselor?

4 minutes

  • Project the first few Counselor Introduction Slides.
  • Counselor explains: “I help you talk about your feelings, solve problems, and feel safe at school.”
  • Show pictures of the counselor helping students or reading together.

Step 3

Q&A Time

3 minutes

  • Counselor invites students: “What would you like to know about my job?”
  • Teacher repeats questions and helps students take turns.
  • Counselor answers in simple, child-friendly language.

Step 4

Feelings Check-In

5 minutes

  • Gather around the Class Feelings Chart.
  • Counselor models pointing to how she feels (e.g., happy, curious) and names the feeling.
  • Students take turns pointing to or placing a marker on how they feel today.
  • Counselor affirms each: “I see you feel ___—that’s okay!”

Closing & Reminder

  • Counselor thanks students for their questions and sharing.
  • Counselor reminds: “You can visit me anytime you want to talk or if you’re feeling something.”
  • Teacher leads a group clap to say goodbye.

• Hi! I’m Ms. Lewis
• I’m here to help you feel happy and safe at school

Welcome students and introduce yourself. Say: “Hello everyone! I’m Ms. Lewis, your school counselor. I’m so happy to meet each of you!”

What Is a School Counselor?

• A helper and friend in school
• Someone who listens when you have big feelings
• A problem-solver when things feel hard

Explain what a counselor does. Use simple language and point to each bullet as you speak.

Helping with Feelings

• Sad, happy, or angry?
• You can talk to me about any feeling

Show a friendly picture of you listening to a child. Say: “If you feel sad, worried, or excited, you can tell me!”

Solving Problems Together

• Friends not playing?
• Hard time with work?
• Let’s find a solution!

Show an image of two children talking with you. Say: “We can think of ideas together to fix problems.”

Your Safe Space

• My office door is always open
• Ask your teacher or a grown-up to help you visit

Show a simple map or icon of your office door. Say: “My office is a safe place. You can come anytime!”

Daily Feelings Check-In

• We’ll point to our feeling each morning
• It helps me know how you’re doing

Introduce the Class Feelings Chart. Say: “Every day, we’ll share how we feel with our chart!”

• You can visit me anytime
• Let’s have a great year together!

Wrap up the slide deck. Smile and encourage questions. Say: “I can’t wait to talk with each of you!”
